The Family of Emma Maria Christina Schmidt
Information on Rosehill cemetery by David Wendell, formerly historian and archivist at Rosehill.
Emma Maria Christina Schmidt, daughter of Johann Joachim Schmidt and Dorothea Elizabeth Gartz, was born on 12 Apr 1876 in Two Rivers, Manitowoc, Wisconsin and died on 28 Aug 1958 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois at age 82.
Emma married Henry C. Bach on 10 Apr 1901 in Chicago. Henry was born on 4 Jun 1869 in Germany. He immigrated in 1878 and was naturalized in 1881. Carl died on 12 Feb 1934 in Chicago at age 64. They had four children: Carl, Dorothy, Mildred H., and Katherine.
In the 1910 and 1920 Federal censuses the couple had a residence in Chicago, Ward 26, Cook, Illinois.
Carl’s occupation was a brick manufacturer (as shown in the 1910,1920 and 1930 Federal census). His company was probably the supplier for construction materials for the Schmidt Bros. Construction Company.
Emma (Schmidt) Bach would give things to the family and occasionally would stay at the Jindra farm.
Emma is buried at Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago. Rosehill is the largest cemetery and one of the oldest in the city of Chicago. It was established in 1859. The area of the city was previously called Roe’s Hill, named for a nearby tavernkeeper , Hiram Roe. Due to a mapmakers error, the area was later renamed to Rosehill. Rosehill is west of the Metra tracks parallel to Ravenswood Avenue. Well-known burials here are Oscar Mayer, Montgomery Ward and Richard Sears. More about Rosehill
Children of Emma and Carl Bach:
- Carl H. Bach was born about 1902 in Illinois. After the depression, partnered with Erwin Meineke in the mason/stone repair business. Carl married Asta Hagelund. Asta was born 6 Jul 1899 and died Dec. 1982. The couple had two children. On November 15, 1952 Carl and Asta took a trip on the ship Queen of Bermuda. They departed and arrived at the Port of New York. They carried 6 pieces of baggage. Their children did not accompany them. (see a photo of Queen of Bermuda)
- Dorothy Bach was born about 1904 in Illinois and believed to have died about 1924 (about age 20).
- Mildred H. Bach -There are two possible years of birth/death of Mildred. Family notes say she was born June 18 and died at 9 months old (no year). In looking at the Illinois death indexes I found a child, Mildred, born in 1907 in Ilinois and died on 5 Jul 1908 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. She was 11 months old. I do not know if these are the same child. Further investigation will be needed to determine the correct dates.
- Katherine B. Bach was born on 1 Aug 1909 in Illinois and died Aug. 1957 at age 48. Katherine married Ted K. Keller on 4 Nov 1933. They had two children, a son and daughter.
