1203 Infant Daughter Dies

Carol the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heber Clayton died on Tuesday and the funeral was held on Thursday from St. Luke's church. THe child was four weeks old.

1208 Inquest Scheduled Thursday Morning

Manitowoc-An inquest into the traffic death of Wenzel Zima, 67, of 1608 A Marshall St., will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in the County Courthouse with Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen presiding.

Zima, a retired, carpenter-contractor, was fatally injured while crossing the street near his home late on the afternoon of Dec. 3.

Dirver of the car involved was Donald Bouril, 31, of Francis Creek, an automobile salesman.

Zima was the fourth person to be killed on city streets during 1958.

IRA STEHN DIES AT MISHICOT HOME TODAY.
Former Two Rivers Contractor Passes Away Early This Morning.

Ira Stehn, one of the pioneer residents of Manitowoc County, who was born in the town of Mishicot, lived at Two Rivers for a number of years where he was a carpenter contractor, and then returned to
Mishicot in 1908, died there at his home at an early hour this morning. Burial will take place from the home at Mishicot on Saturday afternoon with interment there.

Mr. Stehn was a son of Mr. and Mrs. August Stehn who came to this county before 1860, and after locating at Two Rivers, moved to Mishicot where they reared a family in a log cabin and cleared a
section of land. Ira Stehn, after growing to manhood, located in Two Rivers and followed the carpenter trade and contracting business.

He built a number of the larger buildings there including the Hamilton School building.

Returns to Mishicot

In 1908, he returned to the village where he opened a soft drink parlor which he continued to conduct up to the time of his death.

He was married at Two Rivers to Miss Josephine Wilsman who survives him with two children, a daughter, Mrs. Hugo Holst, and a son, Randolph Stehn, both of Mishicot. Two sisters, Mrs. Lena Voelker of Mishicot, and Mrs. Louis Hoeltger of Coleman, Wis., also survive.

Irene M. Grall, age 78, of 406 Forest Home Drive, Francis Creek, died Wednesday, April 29, 1992, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2, 1992, at 11 a.m. from St. Anne Catholic Church in Francis Creek. Rev. Raphael Birringer will officiate at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be at the St. Anne Cemetery in Francis Creek.

Born on January 6, 1914, at Mason City, Iowa, daughter of the late Garth and Blanche MOore Veech. She grew up and attended schopls in Mason City, Iowa, and Duluth, Minn. She graduated from Duluth Central High School. She married Arthur W. McManus on September 24, 1932. He preceded her in death November, 1956. She then married Frank J. Grall in February of 1959. He preceded her in death February 1971. Mrs. Grall was a member of St. Anne Catholic Chuch, Catholic Womens Club, and was active in the Red Cross and the Blood Bank. She received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Manitowoc Co. Unit of the American Cancer Society in 1970. Irene struggled until her death to conquer cancer.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur W. McManus of Wauwatosa, Wis., Michael L. McManus of Stateville, N.C., a daughter Kathleen B. Conway of Woodbridge, Va., a brother David Garth Veech of Mason City, Iowa; three sisters, Ruth Emma Jarosh of Mason City, Iowa, Edith Virginia Krajnik of Francis Creek, Wis., Barbara Ellen Borchard of Kansas City, Kan. grandchildren, great grandchildren; step children; nieces; nephews and other relatives and friends surivive. She was preceded in death by a son, David McManus, and three grandsons, Brian, Michael and Daniel McManus.

Friends may call at St. Anne Catholic Church on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The family suggest that memorials be made to Holy Family Memorial Home Hospice Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville is serving the family.

Mrs. Irma Retzlaff, 76, of 2110-13th st., Two Rivers, died at the home late Sunday night. She had been in failing health for the past two years.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. T.F. Uetzmann officiating. Burial will be in Mishicot Public Cemetery.

Mrs. Retzlaff, nee Irma Freis, was born Sept. 3, 1885, in the Town of Kossuth, a daughter of the late Fred and Catherine Lenhardt Freis. She was married June 18, 1836, to William Retzlaff at Manitowoc. She had been residing at Two Rivers since. Her husband died April 28, 1940, in Two Rivers.

Surviving are a brother, Hugo Freis, of Two Rivers, a niece and three nephews.

Friends may call at Klein and Stangel, Inc. Funeral Home, Two Rivers, after 2 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday when the casket will be taken to the church where the body will lie in state after 11 p.m.
until the time of service.

Mrs. A. Skwor Died Saturday at Son's Home

Bessemer - Mrs. Adolph Skwor, 81, early pioneer resident, died Saturday at 4:30 pm at the home of her son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Skwor, with whom she lived for the past five weeks.

Mrs. Skwor suffered a stroke five weeks ago, and although she was physically invalided as the result, she was mentally keep and alert to the time of her sudden death on Saturday.

Mrs. Skwor was born Anna Terch, on July 13, 1872 at Appleton, Wis. She came to Bessemer among the early pioneers in 1887, to help her uncle, Frank Schleis, who established one of the first boarding houses here in his building, later known as Adolph Johnson's First and Last Chance, on the Old County Road.

Later Mrs. Skwor worked for Mittenthal, who operated a clothing store in the building now occupied by Bob's Cafe, which was erected by Mittenthal.

Coming to Bessemer at the age of 15 years, Mrs. Skwor was greatly impressed by the activities of growth and development of the new community and was an authority on its early history. She recalled that, when she arrived the city was moving the cemetery from the courthouse site to its present Hillcrest location, to clear the area for the court house construction. Through the years she was active in the work of the growing community.

On October 30, 1892, she was married, at her home in Medford, Wis., to Adolph Skwor, who came here in 1888 from Meribel (sic), Wis.

Mrs. Skwor was a member of the St. Sebastian Church and was active in the Ladies Guild and other organizations. She was also a member of the Bohemian Fraternal Organization.

Mrs. Skwor was predominantly a homemaker. After rearing three children, to adulthood, she reared six grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Raymond, Bessemer; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Peter Terch, Virginia, Minn; Mrs. Ed arcoe, Pocatella, Idaho; Mrs. J. A. Fifer, Vale, Ore; and Mrs. Rose Eaton, Lakeworth, Fla.

She was precede in death by her husband December 1952; by one sone Louise, who died in 1921 as the result of injuries sustained in World War I; and by one daughter Mrs. Arthur Johnson, who died in 1932.

Funeral services will be solemnized at the St. Sebastian Church Wednesday at 9 a, Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. The remains are at the J.J. Frick Funeral Home which will open Tuesday afternoon. Rosary devo....

Mrs. Adolph Skwor
Bessemer-Funeral services were held Wednesday at 9 am for Mrs. Adolph Skwor, 81, pioneer resident who died Saturday morning from complications following a stroke.

Services were solemnized at the St. Sebastian Church at a requiem High mass celebrated by the Rev. Milton Vanitvelt.

Interment was made in Hillcrest Cemetery. Serviing as pallbearers were George Jezek, John Finnegan, Joseph Halama, Frank Blaha, George L. Mazanee, and Leonard C. Kulasavicz.

1219 It is believed the body is buried in Wisconsin. A note in the estate paperwork of Henry Jones shows a bill from the estate administrator for services rendered to accompany body east. Adler Londo was paid money on account for funeral expenses. It is likely he is buried in the Wausau area.

1221 J. Meineke, a wealthy farmer who resided a few miles north of the city, died last week while in Chicago for the purpose of receiving medical treatment. His remains were brought home for interment last Friday (5th) evening and the funeral, which took place on Sunday (7th), was one of the largest ever seen in this vicinity.

Couple Wed In Rites At Mishicot

The parsonage of Holy Cross Church at Mishicot was the scene of the wedding of Miss Gladys Chaloupka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Chaloupka, Mishicot, Route 1 and Anton Fictum, 925 North 22nd street, Manitowoc at 3 p.m. today. The Rev. Van Bogart officiated.
Mrs. William Chaloupka Jr. was matron of honor and William Chaloupka Jr. brother of the bride, was best man.
The bride was dressed in a dress of soldier blue crepe with a lace yoke and blue velvet bows. Her accessories matched and she carried a bouquet of white carnations.
The matron of honor wore a dress of shell pink with a tucked bodice and wore a corsage of white carnations.
Dinner will be served this evening at the bride's home at 6 o'clock to the immediate families and close friends, and the couple will greet their friends later at a reception.
The couple will make their home in Manitowoc at 1003 North 21st street. The groom is a welder at the Manitowoc Ship Building Co. and a graduate of Lincoln High School.
The bride is a graduate of the Mishicot High School and of the Bureau of Home Nursing in Milwaukee. Before he marriage she was employed in that city.
Among the showers at which the bride was honored was one on Wednesday evening at her home. Four Killed In Two-Car Crash
Accident Occurs Near Two Rivers
Autos Collide at Unprotected Town Road Intersection in Early Evening.

TWO RIVERS—A two-car crash at an unprotected town road intersection three miles north of this city in the early evening darkness Friday killed four persons and injured two others.

Victims of the tragic accident were Herman W. Jaeckel, 69, and his wife, Nellie, both of 1618-19th St., Two Rivers, and Jo Ann M. Reis, 15, of Rt. 1, Mishicot.

Friday’s crash occurred at about 7:40 p.m. county police said, as the Jaeckel car was traveling north and the Reis vehicle was proceeding east. Both roads leading to the intersection, located west of Shambeau Sales and Service garage, were blacktopped. Police said there were no arterial signs at the intersection but that visibility in the area was good.

Vehicle Cartwheeled

According to the police investigation, the Reis car was struck in the right side by the Jaeckel vehicle in the eastbound lane near the center of the intersection. The vehicles then slapped together with the Jaeckel car coming to rest in the northeast ditch. The Reis vehicle cartwheeled and came to rest on its top in a field. Mr. and Mrs. Jaeckel were both thrown from their car and died almost instantly
of multiple injuries. Jane Menges and Jo Ann Reis were pinned in the back seat area of the Reis Auto.

The Menges girl died of multiple injuries enroute to the hospital and Miss Reis was pronounced dead at the scene of head injuries…

Miss Menges was born Dec. 27, 1952, a daughter of William and Elaine Brouchoud Menges. She attended St. John Lutheran Graded School, Gibson, and was a sophomore at Manitowoc Lutheran High School, where she was a member of the Pep Club and Ushers Club. She was a member of St. John Church.

Survivors include her parents, six brothers, three sisters, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandparents (names omitted for privacy).
Funeral services for Jane Louise Menges, 15, of Larrabee will be at 3 p.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, Town of Gibson. The Rev. Roger Fleming will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at Lambert Funeral home, Mishicot, after 3 p.m. Sunday until 11 a.m.

Monday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services.

Memorials may be made to Manitowoc Lutheran High School.

BREEZY POINT -- Janice Ann Hellie, 57, Breezy Point, died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at her home.

She was born March 24, 1942, in Brown County, to Delbert and Pearl (White) Nelson. She attended school in Franklin, graduating from Franklin High School in 1960. She married J. Gregory Hellie on Aug. 26, 1961, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Franklin. She attended Lakewood Community College in White Bear Lake and earned her registered nurse degree. She worked as an RN for United Hospital in St. Paul and Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater. Following her retirement, they moved to Breezy Point. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she founded the Parish Nurse Program. She was president of the Breezy Point Women's Club and a member of the Pelican Lake Conservation Club, Sons of Norway, Hospice Nurse, and the Crow Wing County Health Board.

Survivors include her husband of Breezy Point; a daughter, Kristin Hellie-Vogel, Mankato; a son, Joseph Hellie, Sartell; four grandchildren; and a sister, Carol Anderson, Gilbert, Ariz.

Her parents, and a sister, Debra Nelson, died earlier.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes with Rev. David Stevens officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Breezy Point Cemetery.

Friends may call at Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

FOX LAKE - Jeffry G. Jonas, 24, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 16, 200 5, as a result of an automobile accident in Waushara County.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 10 a. m. at Annunciation Catholic Parish Church, Fox Lake. The Rev. Michael Wi ld will officiate. Burial will follow in Annunciation Parish Cemetery, to wn of Trenton, Dodge County. Friends may call on Monday, Jan. 17, fr om 4 to 8 p.m., at Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home, Fox Lake, and on Tuesday, J an. 18, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at Annunciation Catholic Par ish Church, Fox Lake.

Jeffry was born on Oct. 27, 1980, in Waupun, the son of Gerald and Cher yl (Ring) Jonas. He attended the Waupun School District, graduating from W aupun High School in 1999. He furthered his education at MATC-Mequon, rece iving a degree in the landscape design program and continued to be self-em ployed, operating a landscaping business known as Jonas Greenscapes. He wi ll always be remembered as an ambitious young man who was good natured wi th a great sense of humor that loved the outdoors whether it was workin g, fishing or hunting and as an adoring "Uncle Jeff" to his two nieces.

Survivors include his parents, Gerald (Cheryl) Jonas, Fox Lake; two sister s, Kerry Jonas, Fontana, and Kathleen Jonas, Fox Lake; two nieces, Liber ti and Lydia Jonas Jongebloed; maternal grandmother, Kathleen Ring, Fox La ke; paternal grandparents, Melvin (Elizabeth) Jonas, Fox Lake; his dog, In dica; cousins, several other relatives and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Henry Ring in 199 3, and one uncle, Bryan Ring in 1977.

The Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home, Fox Lake, is serving the family.

Mrs. Rose Jens, 93, who resided at Park Lawn Home, Manitowoc, died Friday at the home.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. the Rev. Gerald Schrankler will officiate with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Mrs. Jens was born July 9, 1882, in Bohemia. She was married to Edwin Jens in 1921 at Manitowoc. He preceded her in death in 1963.

Surviors include four grand-daughters, Mrs. William (Jean) Holschbach, Mrs. Orville (Phyllis) Kodet, Mrs. Howard (Carole) Awe and MRs. Luanne Sipnefski, of Manitowoc, 10 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. A son and two daughters preceded her in death.

Jerry Ahrens, 80, of Route 1, Two Rivers, died Saturday morning in Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 2 pm Monday in Zion United Methodist Church, Mishicot. The Rev. Bernard Fetterlund will officiate and burial will be in Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers.

Mr. Ahrens was born June 8, 1896 in the Town of Two Rivers, son of the late John and Augusta Runge Ahrens. He graduated from Tannery Graded School, Washington High School, Two Rivers; Manitowoc County Normal School and River Falls College in 1919. He was a veteran of World War I.

He married Helen Naser Oct. 18, 1924. They farmed at Route 1, Two Rivers since then. Mr. Ahrens was a longtime member and secretary of the Twin Rivers Coop of Mishicot for 25 years. He was a member and past president of the Mishicot Senior Citizens. He was a 4-H Leader for 21 years. Mr. Ahrens was a member of the Two Rivers American Legion and of the Westshore Sportsmans Club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jack of Two Rivers and Gene of Sheboygan; a daughter, Mrs. Alan (JoAnn) Groll of Algoma; three sisters, Mrs. Ed (Myrtle) Kastrosky of Two Rivers, Mrs. Milton (Cora) Mueller of Manitowoc and Mrs. George (Mildred) Walters of Spokane, Washington; and 12 grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Friends may call in Lambert Funeral Home, Mishicot, after 4 pm this Sunday afternoon and Monday from noon until the time of service.

Frank Jindra, 91 a resident seven years at Shady Lane Home, Manitowoc, died early Wednesday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where he had been removed the day before.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Donald Feller will officiate and burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Mishicot, Mishicot.

Mr. Jindra was born Aug. 10, 1872, in the Town of Kossuth, son of the late George and Mary Jindra. He farmed in the Town of Mishicot, residing at Kingsbridge before moving to Shady Lane Home. He never married.

Surviving are nieces and nephews. Four sisters and five brothers preceded him in death.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Thursday where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

George F. Jindra, 77 of Dickey, N.D., a former Two Rivers resident, died unexpectedly Wednesday night.

A pre-committal devotion will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lambert Funeral Home, Mishicot. Burial will be in the Mishicot Public Cemetery.

Mr. Jindra was born in the Town of Mishicot April 6, 1893, a son of he late George and Mary Lenhardt Jindra. He was graduated from the old Manitowoc County Normal School and taught in schools in Maribel and in North Dakota before coming to Two Rivers, where he resided for several year. He married the former Lydia Ebert at Dickey in 1921.

Besides his wife he leaves a son, Robert, of Ouray, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Alice ell of Mishicot and Miss Hilda Jindra of Gary, Ind.; a brother REuben, of Two Rivers and two grandchidren. Four brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Friends may call at the Lambert Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Sunday.
