- Waldemar (Wally) E. Freis, age 87, of 1414 N. 23rd. St., Manitowoc died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999. He was surrounded by a
praying family while big band music played.
Wally was born April 27, 1912, to Friedrich Ernst and Maria Margaretha (Luckow) Freis. He graduated from Pleasant Hill, a one-room school, and attended eighth grade twice when high school was not an option. On Oct. 24, 1942, he married Helen Mary
Welch in Maplegrove, they then took over the Freis family farm. He farmed until 1975. He was an Incorporator and for 15 years
a field man, for the Wisconsin Feeder Pig Marketing Co-op, Francis Creek. He was also a rural mail carrier, three years for the U.S. Post Office, and fourteen years for the Lakeshore Chronicle. In 1987 he wrote his memoirs and continually updated them. He had a great sense of humor and used it well in public speaking. His people skills shone as chairman of Lake to Lake's Fact-Finding Committee and Incorporator of Lake to Lake Dairy Co-op. He also was president of Lakeland Egg Co-op and a charter member of the Cleveland Lions Club, where his roles included director, president, and zone chairman. Wally and his wife of 57 years were well-known dancers and lovers of Big Band music, dancing their last dance together on Nov. 7,1999.
Survivors include his wife Helen and seven children, Mary Ann (David) Schnur, Kiel; Barbara (Prince) Lawsha, Santa Crus, Calif .; Kathryn (Dr. Robert) Gahl, Two Rivers; William (Judy) Freis, Glenbeulah; Jon Freis. Oneida; Thomas (Jamis) Freis, Newton; Lisa
(Keith) VandenAvond, De Pere; fifteen grandchildren, Paula and Jeff Schnur, Nora and Owen Zylstra, Julie, David and Tom
Gahl, Aaron Freis, Adam, Libby, Stephanie and Emily Freis, Benjamin, Joseph and Katie Vanden Avond; a sister, Adeline Ruh:
also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters, and a daughter, Lori Maureen.
Friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday at Holy Innocents Catholie Church 9 a.m. until the time of mass at 10 a.m. A prayer service will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Freis will be celebrated by Rev. Gerald Foley on Monday, Dec. 13 1999 at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc, at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
