On Monday an old man named Bartels(sic) was killed in the city by a runaway team.
He lived near Silver Lake and came to the city to get a load of sand and some
leather for his son who is a shoemaker. He purchased the leather and placed it on
the sidewalk near Carl Hartwig's store. He then got his load of sand and when about
to put the leather in the wagon his team became frightened. He seized them by the
bridle and was dragged along and crushed against a post. He fell and the wagon
passed over him. He lived only two hours after the accident occurred. He was 70
years of age.
