Herman Freitag was born September 14, 1846, in Prussia. The family moved in 1861 to Nicollet county, Minnesota, and the next year he enlisted in First Minnesota mounted rangers; served about nine months; re-enlisted in 1864 in Company F, First regiment heavy artillery, and was mustered out at the close of the war. Soon after returning he bough 160 acres of section 14, Nicollet. Has been supervisor seven years. Married in 1867, Wilhelmena Kieson, who died November 3, 1873. Three children were born to them. In 1874 he married Minnie Brand, who has borne two children.

The St. Peter Herald says that, about three months ago, Herman Freitag, of Brown county, bought a team of horses from Henry Bode, of that city, and took the team from Mr. Bode's barn at Nicollet. About a week ago one of the horses made its escape from the pasture and found its way back to the Nicollet farm, some forty miles distant. The horse unassisted let down the bars, opened the stable door and was found in the morning in its old accustomed stall. Some sagacity about the animal surely.

By Virtue of an Execution, issued out of and under the Seal of the District Court of Minnesota, upon a judgment rendered and docketed in the said Court, on the 19th day of May A.D. 1896, in an action wherein John C. Rudolph was Plaintiff, and Herman Freitag and Wilhelm Meyer were Defendants, in favor of the said Plaintiff and against the said Defendants, for the sum of three hundred forty and 75-100 ($349.75) Dollars, which execution was directed and delivered to me as Sheriff in and for the said County of Brown. I have this 23d day of May A.D. 1896, levied upon all the right, little and interest of the said Defendant Wilhelm Meyer in and to the following described real property in Brown County, State of Minnesota to wit: The north half of the North West quarter of Section No. Four (4) in Township No. One Hundred and eleven (111) North of Range No. Thirty-three (33), West; the South half the South West quarter of Section No. Thirty-three(33), Lot. No. Two (2) of Section No. Thirty-four (34), also a tract of land described as follows, to-wit; Commencing at the North East corner of the South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section No. Thirty-three (33), thence running West to the North West corners of the South East quarter of the South West quarter of said Section No. Thirty-three (33), thence North 7.91 chains, thence East 16 degrees North 5.95 chains, thence in a Southeasterly direction to the place of beginning, containing 14 acres more or less; All of the foregoing being in Township No. One Hundred and twelve (112) North of Range No. Thirty-three (33) West.

Herman Freitag, the man who was struck by a freight train in this village yesterday, was taken to Brainerd hospital, and had one leg amupted at the knee. his left arm is badly broken and mangled, but amputation is not necessary.

Killed by the Cars
Last Tuesday evening about 7 o'clock as Herman Feitag(sic) was walking on the railroad track, on his way from town to his home one mile east, he was overtaken and run over by an outgoing freight train running at high speed. The trainmen saw the accident and they stopped as soon as possible and went back to where the man was lying, picked him up and brought him back to town. It was found that the train had passed over an arm and a leg. The unfortunate man was taken to the hospital at Brainerd on the 11 o'clock passenger train, and there his injured limbs were amputated and everything possible done to save his life, but he died on Sunday. The remains were brought to Aitkin Monday, and the funeral services were held in the afternoon.
Mr. Freitag was an old soldier, about 54 years old, and leaves a wife and five children. He came here with his family from near Mankato about a year ago. He is somewhat deaf, which possibly is the reason he did not hear the train.
