The Otto and Rose Hilgert Buckendahl Family
Otto Charles Buckendahl was born May 21, 1900, in Pierce. He was baptized and as a youth was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from high school and attended Concordia College at Steward, Nebraska. On September 24, 1922, Otto married Rose Hilgert who was born May 26, 1901. To this marriage was born Dale Edward on July 4, 1930. Also, a child was stillborn and another died in infancy. Otto had bookkeeping experience with the family's farm implement business in Pierce and worked for a variety of dealers trying to reorganize after the 1930's depression. Locations included Plainview, Sidney and Scottsbluff in Nebraska; Powell and Cheyenne in Wyoming; Sterling and Ft. Collins in Colorado. They lived in Scottsbluff when Otto died February 12, 1951, at the age of 49 when his car stalled in a snowstorm. Otto had gone to Cheyenne, Wyoming on a business trip and attempted to return home in the snowstorm. His car stalled and Otto tried to walk to a range house. His frozen body was found about a half mile from the house. Rose remained in Scottsbluff until 1955 when she moved to Boulder, Colorado to be near her son. She died in November 23, 1986, at the age of 85. Otto and Rose are buried in St. John's Cemetery east of Pierce.
