    CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
    First Lieutenant Leland L. Eckart., was a Marine pilot assigned to VMF-213, a fighter squadron based at Henderson Field, Guadalcanal.
    On 25 April 1943, VMF-213 launched a strike against Japanese forces at Kolombangara Island. Eckart was part of a four-plane flight that strafed Blackett Strait and then attacked a large force of unsuspecting enemy aircraft over Vangunu. In the course of a few minutes, six Zeros and two Corsairs went down, including Eckart’s F4U-1 02399.
    No definitive trace of Lieutenant Eckart was ever found; he was declared dead as of 26 April 1945.

    Walter W. ECKART, 53, who lived in Millark, died today in Woodlawn hospital. He had been in ill health for several years and recently underwent surgery.

    Mr. Eckart, a member of the LeRoy C. Shelton American Legion post band, was born June 7, 1893, in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. He was the son of Fred and Augusta ECKART. A retired machinist, Mr. Eckart was married to Marie HALLMAN, Dec. 8, 1915, in Wisconsin. They lived in Chicago several years and moved to Millark three years ago.

    Survivors include the wife; two sons, Wallace [ECKART] and Wilton ECKART, Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Helen AMENSON, Green Bay, Wis., and Mrs. Emma PHEIFFER, Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and one grandchild.

    Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of the sons from Chicago. The body is at the Thacker & Sharpe funeral home where friends may call.

    Marie ECKART, 87, 1001 Jefferson street, died at noon Monday in Woodlawn hospital. Surviving is a son, W. F. ECKART, Millark. Rites are pending at Zimmerman Brothers funeral home, Rochester.

    Matthew Eckart Dies; Rites are Held Monday

    Funeral services for Mathew Eckart, whose death occurred at 6 o'clock Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jos. Pfeifer in Sturgeon Bay, were held from St. Joseph's church at 9 am, Monday. The Rev. A. J. Koeferl officiated at the last rites and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. Mr. Eckart had been in failing health for two months following a stroke of apoplexy.

    Deceased was born in Bohemia May 17, 1849, and at the age of six years his parents immigrated to America settling in Manitowoc county were Mr. Eckart grew up and about 60 years ago united in marriage to mary Pelishek. The young couple came to Door county shortly after their marriage and settled on a farm in the town of Nasewaupee, which they continued to operate for forty years, or until Mrs. Eckart's death about twenty years ago. Since then Mr. Eckart made his home with his children.

    Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Eckart, four of whom preceded their father in death. The four living children are Geo. Eckart, new Richland, Minn.; W.W. Eckart, Chicago; mrs. emma Pfeifer, Sturgeon Bay; and mrs. Helen Amenson, Green Bay. Other relatives are two brothers and one sister, John Eckart, Albert Lea, Minn.; George, Antigo; and mrs. Anna Censky, Antigo, and a number of grand children.

    Among those who came from a distance to be present at the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Eckart and son Wallace; Miss Elaine Eckart and Walter G. Eckart, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Geo Eckart, Mrs. John Kubeny, Frank Kubeny, Mrs. Geo. Eckart, Jr. and Mrs. Anna Censky, Antigo; Mr. and Mrs. John Surprise and son EArl, Shiocton; Henry Eckart, Antigo; Mr. and mrs. J.
