Immigration Information: In the Hamburg Sailing records we find the following entry that matches the time period and family of August Jonas from Germany. The only discrepency is the place of birth of August. We have no proof of where August was born, so we believe that this entry is the August Jonas in question. Dates of departure, family members, and port of arrival follow with the other informaition we have.

Here is the translation of the record:

Jonas, August, Frau u 2 Kdr 1/2 3 J. Which is: Jonas, August. Wife and 2 children (ages) 1/2 and 3 years. Place of birth: Neustet, Thueringen. This probably refers to Neustaed t, a village just west and slightly north of Eisenach, in Thuringia, central Germany. That's Neustadt with an Umlaut over the a which I can't type in email. Neustet is just an inaccurate transliteration of the correct spel ling Neustaedt, I think. Ship was the Vorwaerts, prussian, Capt. J. Finck. Destination was Quebec, sailing date 19 June, and then LXXX which stan ds for ???

Information in the First German Church Manitowoc County and Kewaunee County Church records "The family later Moved to Kewaunee". It is believed the family did not m ove residences, but instead changed church affiliations.

The Manitowoc County Chronicle June 1, 1875 August Jonas, a well-to-do farmer living about three miles northeast of Mishicott, is engaged, at present in building a handsome brick residence on his farm.

    Died:
That said Minnie Jonas would have been sixty-two years of age on the first day of June, 1916, if she were living; that affiant's father and mother prior to their death lived with the affiant on his farm in the town of Two Creeks, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, where affiant has ever since resided and still resides; that affiant's father died about twenty-seven years ago and affiant's mother died about twenty-four years ago on said farm; that affiant saw his sister Minnie Jonas for the last time shortly before his father died, when she visited with the family on said farm in the town of Two Creeks.

That after affiant's father died and about twenty-six years ago, affiant's mother got a letter from said Minnie Jonas from Cincinnati, Ohio, which letter was answered; that when affiant's mother took sick he wrote to his said sister Minnie at the address at Cincinnati, Ohio, which she had given in her previous letter but never received an answer, and that thereafter, both before and after affiant's mother died, he again wrote to his said sister Minnie at said address but has never heard from her and never seen her since.

    Notes:

Here is what he found in the Mecklenberg Census: Then I think I've found the birth record of your ancestor August Jonas. In the 1819 census of Mecklenburg person no. 237 is Gust Christian Theodor Jonas, b. 2 Jan. 1817. He is the son of Jochen Friedrich Jonas, Tageloehner, born in Kittendorf 29 Feb. 1785 (I can't read the month very well, and 1785 can't be a leap year, but I'll try again.), and Mar. (Maria? Margareta? I think Maria) Friederike Jonas, born in Kittendorf 13 April 1787. Others living in the same household are Johann Christian Friedrich Jonas, born 4 Dec. 1813, presumably a brother of your August Jonas and some poeple who don't seem to be family members. Andreas Friedrich Paarmann, b. 29 Nov. 1802, servant; Theodor Christoph Andreas Voss, born 15 Nov. 1802 in Flotow, servant, and Catharine Sophie Diederich, born 19 Oct. 1786, from Gievitz, a servant's wife (as far as I can make out her occupation). Often these Tageloehner had to share their dwelling with other employees of the estate.

Jochen married JONAS, Marie Friederike. Marie (daughter of JONAS, Berend Christian and Living) was born on 13 Apr 1787 in Kittendorf, Stavenhagen, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany; died after 1867. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  JONAS, Marie Friederike was born on 13 Apr 1787 in Kittendorf, Stavenhagen, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany (daughter of JONAS, Berend Christian and Living); died after 1867.
    Children:
    1. JONAS, Joh Christian Fried. was born on 4 Dec 1813 in Kittendorf, Stavenhagen, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany; and died.
    2. 4. JONAS, Gustav Christian Theodor was born on 2 Jan 1817 in Kittendorf, Stavenhagen, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany; died between Jun 1885 and Sep 1890.
    3. JONAS, Marie Sophie Friederike was born on 21 Sep 1818 in Kittendorf, Stavenhagen, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany; died on 16 Nov 1903 in Kittendorf, Stavenhagen, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany.
