Pioneer Rest Cemetery There is a grave marker in Plot [18-2] that gives her date of birth 1877 date of death 1923 ossw. Fred T. Sr. In that plot as well there is a marker that says Ida Freitag Jonas bur. 10 -22-1956

The story has been told by Ida's son Frederick William that Ida died after being kicked by a horse. He stated he was standing next to his mother when she was kicked. Fred T., Frederick William's father blamed him for the accident. Frederick William was forced to quit school in order to take care of his younger siblings.

In 1956, Ida's son Harry, drove to Minnesota to gather the remains of Ida and bring them back to Wisconsin. It has been told by her granddaughter (Elaine Jonas Chaloupka) that the remains fit inside a shoe box. There is conflicting stories as to why the body was disinterred and moved to Two Rivers. Some say it was because a Highway was being reconstructed in Morton, over the cemetery grounds. An old timer from the area, stated the cemetery Ida was buried in was not affected by the construction. But she was moved anyway. Ida was re-buried in Pioneer Rest Cemetery Two Rivers.

The St. Peter Herald says that, about three months ago, Herman Freitag, of Brown county, bought a team of horses from Henry Bode, of that city, and took the team from Mr. Bode's barn at Nicollet. About a week ago one of the horses made its escape from the pasture and found its way back to the Nicollet farm, some forty miles distant. The horse unassisted let down the bars, opened the stable door and was found in the morning in its old accustomed stall. Some sagacity about the animal surely.

    Died:
    Killed by the Cars

Last Tuesday evening about 7 o'clock as Herman Feitag(sic) was walking on the railroad track, on his way from town to his home one mile east, he was overtaken and run over by an outgoing freight train running at high speed. The trainmen saw the accident and they stopped as soon as possible and went back to where the man was lying, picked him up and brought him back to town. It was found that the train had passed over an arm and a leg. The unfortunate man was taken to the hospital at Brainerd on the 11 o'clock passenger train, and there his injured limbs were amputated and everything possible done to save his life, but he died on Sunday. The remains were brought to Aitkin Monday, and the funeral services were held in the afternoon.

Mr. Freitag was an old soldier, about 54 years old, and leaves a wife and five children. He came here with his family from near Mankato about a year ago. He is somewhat deaf, which possibly is the reason he did not hear the train.

At the end of January 1862, companies from Minnesota were in St. Louis to train at Benton Barracks, where they joined companies from Iowa (three of them German), Nebraska, and Missouri. The companies were organized as the Curtis Horse Regiment, named after Gen. Samuel Curtis, then commander of Benton Barracks. On April 15, 1862, on orders from the secretary of war, Curtis Horse was renamed the Fifth Iowa Cavalry, as more of the men in the regiment were from that state.

The regiment was assigned typical duties for the cavalry. They were to protect railroad and telegraph lines to ensure delivery of supplies and dispatches. Much of their time was spent in scouting, escort and picket duty. In battle, they would be in the advance line of on the flanks and often would chase the retreating enemy. As the army increasingly lived off the land, the cavalry engaged in raids to bring food and horses. The Fifth Iowa Cavalry was active in western an middle Tennessee and Kentucky and northern Alabama. In summer 1862, they built telegraph lines and repaired bridges enabling General Buell to reach Shiloh for a Union victory and kept lines open during the siege of Corinth. Throughout 1863, they continued scouting and raiding and pursued Rebels after Chickamauga.

In January 1864 the regiment's term of service expired. Most of the men reenlisted and were granted a thirty-day veterans' furlough.

It was during this furlough time, William Blum was married.
    -----------------------------------
The regiment originally known as "Curtis Horse" - which title was subsequently changed to the "Fifth Iowa Cavalry" - commenced organization at Benton Barracks, near St. Louis, Mo., on December 20, 1861, pursuant to the following order:

    Special Orders
    No. 70
1: Pursuant to Special order No. 74, of the Department of the Missouri, to carry out special instructions from the Secretary of War, directing the organization of cavalry regiment to be called the "Curtis Horse," the following detachments and companies are united for that purpose, viz.:

Nebraska Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel M. T. Patrick-four companies.

Detachment of Iowa and Minnesota troops, known as the command of Captain Schaeffer de Boernstein-three companies.

Detachment under same command twenty-seven men, company of Osage County Mounted Rifles, commanded by Captain Kidd-one company.

Other detachments and companies may be attached hereafter, not to exceed twelve companies.

It later goes on to say that Company D was composed of men recrited in Omaha, Neb., by William Curl, and thirty-five men from Missouri, recruited by William Aston, and was mustered into service at St. Louis, Nov. 13, 1861.
