161 Daughter Lena's Family and Her Descendants
The Henry and Lena Sporleder Buckendahl Family
Lena Sporleder was born October 4, 1873, at Joliet, Illinois. At age two, she moved with her parents to Carroll, Iowa. Later, they moved to Pierce. She attended school and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran School east of Pierce.
Henry C. Buckendahl was born on March 27, 1867, at Hanover, Germany. He came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buckendahl, when he was three years of age. Information from the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Henry Senior was born in 1837 and died in 1922. His wife was born in 1841 and died in 1914. The family initially lived in Omaha, Nebraska and then homesteaded a farm six miles east of Pierce.
Henry and Lena were married on February 18, 1890, at St. John's Lutheran Church. To this marriage were born seven sons; Fritz Wilhelm (Fred), Carl, Hugo J., Otto, Theodore, Edward, and Ruben as well as two daughters, Lizzie and Rose.
Henry and Lena purchased a homestead tract seven miles east of Pierce and farmed until 1907. They then moved to Pierce and engaged in the hardware and implement business.
After serving on the Pierce city council, Henry was elected mayor for three terms. He served as the president of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Grain Company and the Pierce County Fair and Agricultural Association. He was a member of the Community Club. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Zion Lutheran Church. At the time of his death, the local newspaper's obituary noted he, "was a man of honor and integrity. He was square in his business dealings and to this fact might be attributed his success as a Pierce business man."
Henry suffered from diabetes for a number of years and underwent surgery to amputate his left leg. The shock of the operation caused him to die of a heart attack on August 16, 1932, at the age of 64. Lena died September 24, 1941, at the age of 67. She had been of ill health for more than a year and died because of a heart condition as well as other complications.

163 A Franz Kohout purchased land from via a land patent on 22 Feb 1858. The land was in the same area of residence as Anna and Wencel Tuma. (scan of land patent available)

It is unknown if or how Franz is related to Anna Kohout. I am researching this connection because Anna's first child was born abt. 1861 so Anna arrived in Wisconsin sometime before that.

164 A serious runaway accident occurred near Nicollet station last Friday. Fr. Freitag's hired man was returning from a neighboring field with a spirited team, and beside him on the wagon seat was seated the four-year-old child of Mr. Freitag, who had been visiting at a neighbor's. Arriving at the pasture, the man jumped out to open the gate and before he could regain the lines the horses started into a brisk run toward the house. Mr. C. Freitag, aged 70 years, was in the yard at the time and when the runaways came near him he endeavored to stop them with his cane. His effort only resulted in turning them short around, one of the horses running over him, at the same time upsetting the wagon. The old gentleman was very seriously injured about the head and chest, and the child received a terrible gash on the side of the face and neck, and for a time it was feared the former was fatally hurt. Dr. Daniels of St. Peter was called and at latest accounts both the old gentleman and child were improving. Mr. Albert Freitag, of this city, was informed of the accident by special messenger and he at once went down to assist in caring for the injured. FREITAG, Matilda (I2852)

168 A woman with an 11 month old girl was found on the German ship S.S. Main traveling to Iowa. It is feasible that upon reaching Chicago, she did not have funds to continue to Iowa. The ship arrived 12 Nov 1872 which fits into the timeline of when we think Catherine arrived.

The child's name is Maria which also fits within the age of who we know as Mary Supita.

It is probable that Katherine was pregnant with Frank at the time of her departure to America.

177 According to the 1910 Federal census she immigrated in 1868 and was naturalized in 1905.
According to the 1900 Federal census she immigrated in 1869. Her husband was naturalized.

Between 1790 to 1906: Women were automatically naturalized when their husbands were naturalized, but they are almost never listed by name on the husband's paperwork. Women who marry citizens gain citizenship without any additional paperwork. US-born women who marry non-citizens automatically lose their citizenship.

Her husband died in 1897 so it is unusual that she would be naturalized in 1905. Unless there was an issue that they were not actually married when he obtained his citizenship, the 1905 date is inaccurate.
