1058 MARIA HERLIK from the Kewaunee enterprise newspaper

Friday, June 24, 1910

Mrs. Mary Herlik.

Last Sunday afternoon Mrs. Mary Herlik died at the home of her son John in this city, from infirmities of old age. She was born in Bohemia in 18 23 and when still in her teens was married to George Herlik. They moved to this country in 1863 and settled in Manitowoc County on a forty acre farm where they resided up to four years ago when Mr. Herlik died and the children took hold of the work for the mother. Mrs. Herlik, since the death of her husband, has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Mary Skarwan Kossuth up to about a month ago, when her son begged his sister to leave her to his care where she could live in quiet and also to try and do the duty of every child to his aged parents-to care for her in her waning year s. Eighty-seven years told little on the mind of Mrs. Herlik, and when drawn into a conversation, she displayed a brilliant intelligence and was a good entertainer. She is survived by two daughters and one son: Mrs. Anna Radey and Mrs. Mary Skarwan of Manitowoc County, and John Herlik of this city. At eight o'clock Tuesday morning, the funeral procession left here and grew longer continually. When Gibson was reached, there were over thirty-five teams following the hearse, and as this was in the vicinity of where she s pent nearly all her days in this country, the congregation of friends kept growing larger and larger so that the multitude numbered into hundreds before t destination was reached. Late in the day, the procession reached Kellnersville, where her body was laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery.

1097 Max History (town of Max)

The townsite of Max, ND was originally platted according to a certificate filed by J.G. Sheldrick, Surveyor, on August 8, 1906. Prior to this, people heard rumor that the Soo Line was building north of Garrison by Elbow Lake for the prupose of using water for their steam engines. Businesses were setup on the rolling prairies of an anticipated townsite at this location. The buildings and shacks were arranged in more or less of a haphazard manner due to the fact they could not be permanently placed until they had purchased a lot.

The name of Max was given to this new town after some controversy. It was, at one time, to be named Junction or Junction City, where the Soo Line tracks from the South branched to the East and West. Max was the first name of the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Freitag. Paul Freitag was the first Postmaster and the frist post office to serve this community was on his farm. As the story goes, when the people would go over to the Freitag Post Office to get their mail, Max, a little shaver at the time, would ask the people if they came to "his' post office to get their mail. The people got in the habit of calling it Max's Post Office, and that is the name that stuck when it was moved two miles west to the new townsite.
