810 Immigration Information: In the Hamburg Sailing records we find the following entry that matches the time period and family of August Jonas from Germany. The only discrepency is the place of birth of August. We have no proof of where August was born, so we believe that this entry is the August Jonas in question. Dates of departure, family members, and port of arrival follow with the other informaition we have.

Here is the translation of the record:

Jonas, August, Frau u 2 Kdr 1/2 3 J. Which is: Jonas, August. Wife and 2 children (ages) 1/2 and 3 years. Place of birth: Neustet, Thueringen. This probably refers to Neustaed t, a village just west and slightly north of Eisenach, in Thuringia, central Germany. That's Neustadt with an Umlaut over the a which I can't type in email. Neustet is just an inaccurate transliteration of the correct spel ling Neustaedt, I think. Ship was the Vorwaerts, prussian, Capt. J. Finck. Destination was Quebec, sailing date 19 June, and then LXXX which stan ds for ???

Information in the First German Church Manitowoc County and Kewaunee County Church records "The family later Moved to Kewaunee". It is believed the family did not m ove residences, but instead changed church affiliations.

The Manitowoc County Chronicle June 1, 1875 August Jonas, a well-to-do farmer living about three miles northeast of Mishicott, is engaged, at present in building a handsome brick residence on his farm.

815 In 1900, Ida lived with her mother and children by her first marriage (Howard and Adeline) in Eden Twp. Brown County.

Pioneer Rest Cemetery There is a grave marker in Plot [18-2] that gives her date of birth 1877 date of death 1923 ossw. Fred T. Sr. In that plot as well there is a marker that says Ida Freitag Jonas bur. 10 -22-1956

The story has been told by Ida's son Frederick William that Ida died after being kicked by a horse. He stated he was standing next to his mother when she was kicked. Fred T., Frederick William's father blamed him for the accident. Frederick William was forced to quit school in order to take care of his younger siblings.

In 1956, Ida's son Harry, drove to Minnesota to gather the remains of Ida and bring them back to Wisconsin. It has been told by her granddaughter (Elaine Jonas Chaloupka) that the remains fit inside a shoe box. There is conflicting stories as to why the body was disinterred and moved to Two Rivers. Some say it was because a Highway was being reconstructed in Morton, over the cemetery grounds. An old timer from the area, stated the cemetery Ida was buried in was not affected by the construction. But she was moved anyway. Ida was re-buried in Pioneer Rest Cemetery Two Rivers.

Notes for IDA BERTHA MATHILDA FREITAG: The Morton Enterprise, October 4, 1923 Mrs. Fred Jones Killed Kicked by Horse While Hitching Up Team at Chas. Stoll Home Through an oversite, the account if the death of Mrs. Fred Jones was not published last week. The following is taken from the Franklin Tribune: Mrs. Fred Jones, formerly of Franklin, residing northeast of Morton was kicked by a horse while hitching up her team after a visit at Chas. Stoll home on Wednesday of last week, which resulted in her death the following morning. The tragedy is a severe shock to the bereaved family and their friends. Mrs. Jones had called at the Chas. Stoll home and had stayed for dinner. After dinner she went out to hitch up the team she was driving and as she a ttempted to rearrange some part of the harness the horse kicked striking h er over the heart, and breaking two ribs. She was taken to her home where she was given medical care, but the injury was too severe for her to wi thstand, and she passed away Thursday morning. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Rev. Sauer of Morton officiating, and interment made in the Morton cemetery.

Mrs. Fred Jones, nee Freitag, was born in Nicollet County in 1878, and moved to Brown County with her parents while yet a small girl. At the age of nineteen she was united in marriage to Ray White, who three years later lost his life in a railroad accident. To this union a son and daughter were born, namely, Howard and Adeline White. Seven years later she was united in marriage to Fred Jones. To this union six children were born, namely, Emmet, Harvey, Harry, Fred, Lydia and Irene, all of whom, together with her husband, mourn her untimely death. She also leaves three brothers, Robert, August, and Fred Freitag.

821 In 1920 the family appeared in the Oconto > Little Suamico > District 1 65 Census

William, Elmer, Chester, Elsie and Frank all were listed as single.

From the Oconto County Reporter –History of Little Suamico 1969-70 I believe written by Alice Koehne The One-Room Schoolhouse Closely associated with St. John’s is the Cottonwood Schoolhouse, not only because many of the same persons were organizers of both, but also because the school building now serves the church as a parish hall. As with the church, the settlers organized a school before a building was available to house it. The beginnings of the School District No. 4 goes back to 1892 under the leadership of Henry Koehne, director of the school board; Obediah Ferdon, clerk and Alex Zoeller, treasurer. For the first few years, the scholars met in Ferdon’s home on county trunk S to lea rn their three “R’s” under the tutelage of Gusta Jacques. Ferdon received $4 a month rent for the use of his home and the school teacher was pa id $30, out of which $10 went for room and board. Until August of last year, when it was destroyed by fire the house was the oldest in the school district. (It had been owned for the last years by the Vincent Larsons .) Two of the Little Suamico youngsters who attended school there were Mrs. Ed Allen (Edna DeMaiffe) and the late Minnie Koehne Liebert. Early in the summer of 1894, John Virtues obtained 26 signatures on a petition to be presented to the town board requesting authorization for a school district to encompass a cited territory. The petition notarized by then Justice of the Peace William W. Foster, was favorably considered by t he board members Harry D. Whitcomb, Obediah Ferdon and Henry G. Bramschrieber, and school district No. 4 was born. A few days later, on June 9, the new district called its first meeting a nd again elected Henry Koehne as director of the board, John Gierke as treasurer, and August Alandas clerk. So many people turned out for the meeting that the gathering had to move from the house to the barn to conduct t he business at hand. The following summer, the school board contracted Gust Papenfus to build a schoolhouse on land leased from Asa Foster Sr., (grandfather of the p resent Asa Foster). For the sum of $490 Papenfus furnished both material and labor, including seats and desks. Grandfather Koehne donated the blackboards. By 1905 there were 48 students enrolled in grades one through eight in t he one room schoolhouse. Some of the boys, their education interrupted while helping their families become established in a new land, were as old as 18. The task faced by the young school teachers in handling so ma ny students of varying ages- in discipline as well as teaching- was formidable, and all for the compensation of $25 a month. School was held for s ix months out of each year. During the 66 years of its existence, Cottonwood had 34 teachers all of w omen with the exception of Willard Allen who now serves as mail carrier f or the village. The roster reads as follows: Gusta Jacques, Rose Touchette, Vira McGinnis, Ester Minian, Pearl Trechet te, Kathryn Herald, Laura (Johnson)Virtues, Ida (McDowell) Herbert, Clarice Roy, Lenore Kehl, Kathryn Noonan, Mrs. Gertrude Larson, Ethel Armstrong, Georgia LaVigne, Berna Berman, Mrs. Violet Laduron, Muriel (Coopman) Hicks, Willard Allen, Mae (Young) Koehne, Bernice (Krueger) Bergh, Mildred Murphy, Margaret Rabe, Mary (Whitcomb) Papenfus, Helen (Carey) Daul, Alice (Lorang) Koehne, Adella (Berth) Pagel, Patricia (Young) Mathey, Margar et (Jahnke) Sarvick, Anita (Ward) Kennin, Alice Thome, Nora Johnson, Car yl (Leigh) Hazen, Janet (Jensen) Reed, Mary Ann Otrodovec and Laurell LaCount. During the tenure of one of the early teachers, a tree planting was carried on around the new school, each student responsible for planting and caring for one cottonwood. Not all the new trees made it, and the first sapling to die was the one planted by Margaret Virtues. When Margaret herself died soon after, the students read into this an ominous significance a nd became keenly interested in the survival of their particular tree Most of the trees grew and flourished, however, and in 1919, when the school board began searching for a name they decided on Cottonwood Grove School. Early in 1960 the last class met at Cottonwood school. The following year District No. 4 became part of the Oconto Falls school system and Cottonwood went the way of most of the one-room country schools which have be en closed in the past decade. It was however, rescued from oblivion when the congregation of St. John ’s church bought the building at a cost of $801 from the Oconto Falls school district. The one-time school house was extensively remodeled inside and out and has become an attractive and serviceable parish hall.

BODY OF FILTRATION PLANT OPERATOR DISCOVERED IN TANK

Two Rivers, Wis-(AP)-The body of Walter Jindra, 42-year-old operator and plumber at the municipal filtration plant, was found in a water-filled filter tank last night.

Coroner Gerald A. Rau ordered an inquest for 2 p.m. today, remarking that " there are so many angles to the case that I refuse to make any statements until after the inquest."

Meanwhile, Chief of Police John J. Rebman went to Madison for tests of Jindra's blood and urine.

Two men and a woman, who Sheriff Norman Berkedal said were believed to have been with Jindra early last night, were detained for questioning at the county jail in Manitowoc.

August Gripe, watchman at the waterworks plant, discovered Jindra's body about 9 p.m., three and a half hours after Jindra's tour of duty ended.

Jindra, married and the father of two children, had been employed at the plant since its completion in 1935. He was a past commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

Jindra Death due to Drowning, Jury finds

Two Rivers, Wis-(AP)- Walter Jindra, 44, operator and plumber at the municipal filtration plant whose body was found in a filter tank Wednesday night, came to his death by drowning, a coroner's jury decided late yesterday.

Two men and a woman, who had been held as material witnesses, were released following the verdict.

Jindra's body was found by a night watchman more than three hours after the plant ordinarily closed for the night.

Chief of Police John J. Rebman said a thorough investigation of all circumstances surrounding Jindra's death would be made, adding:

"There are some loose ends remaining after the coroner's jury verdict of death by drowning which have to be looked into to determine if any criminal action is warranted."

The city council expressed itself in favor of an autopsy at city expense. City Attorney F.W. Dicke was ordered to proceed.

Although the verdict of the coroner's jury did not refer to accidental drowning, District Attorney Patrick Dewane said there was anything other than accidental.

Lie Detector Will Be Used in Death Case

Manitowoc, Wis.-Mysterious circumstances surround the investigation into the death of Walter Carroll, proprietor of a Two Rivers filling station, who died Thursday, three days after he had his skull fractured after being hit by a car driven by Mrs. Ray Senglaub, Two Rivers.

Mr. and Mrs. Senglaub are now in Chicago, where they were taken by District Attorney Patrick Dewane and Chief of Police J.J. Rebman of Two Rivers for a lie detector test.

The district attorney said every effort is being made to "get to the bottom of the case".

Though no official statement has been made, the filtration plant death of Walter Jindra is being stirred up again in connection with the Carroll case. Jindra's body, clad only in socks and underwear, was found in the filtration plant tank on March 27.

Many of the same people questioned in the Carroll death were involved in the Jindra case. Drowning was the official reason given for Jindra's death, but no definite explanation of how Jindra came to be in the tank was ever uncovered.

Lie Detector Indicates Death was Accidental

Manitowoc-Lie detector tests given to Mr. and Mrs Walter Senglaub, Two Rivers, showed that the death of Walter Carroll "was an accident in every sense of the word," District Attorney Patrick Dewane was informed Thursday.

Carroll died of a skull fracture last Thursday after he was apparently hit by a car driven by Mrs. Senglaub. The experts further declared that Senglaub "has no further information concerning the drowning of Jindra (Walter Jindra Two Rivers filtration plant employe whose body was found in the bottom of a water vat last March) and that he had nothing to do with his wife's accident.

The Senglaubs were examined in Chicago when they volunteered to undergo the tests. The Senglaubs drove to Chicago in their own car where they m et Dewane and Police Chief J.J. Rebman, Two Rivers, Tuesday.

Dewane announced Thursday that he and Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, have decided to hold an inquest into Carroll's death Monday morning.

838 In the 1855 Wisconsin State Census is listed Wenzel Tuma.
We have no evidence this man is name Wenzel other than that he was head of household. The next Wenzel that we know of would have been just 18 years old. He had immigrated in the 40s, therefore his parents likely traveled with him

In his house were 3 males, 2 females.
5 were foreign born.

We assume this was Wenzel and his wife.
Wenzel the son and Anna the daughter.
We do not know who the 5th person was.
