860 | IRMA RETZLAFF Mrs. Irma Retzlaff, 76, of 2110-13th st., Two Rivers, died at the home late Sunday night. She had been in failing health for the past two years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. T.F. Uetzmann officiating. Burial will be in Mishicot Public Cemetery. Mrs. Retzlaff, nee Irma Freis, was born Sept. 3, 1885, in the Town of Kossuth, a daughter of the late Fred and Catherine Lenhardt Freis. She was married June 18, 1836, to William Retzlaff at Manitowoc. She had been residing at Two Rivers since. Her husband died April 28, 1940, in Two Rivers. Surviving are a brother, Hugo Freis, of Two Rivers, a niece and three nephews. Friends may call at Klein and Stangel, Inc. Skwor Died Saturday at Son's Home Bessemer - Mrs. Adolph Skwor, 81, early pioneer resident, died Saturday at 4:30 pm at the home of her son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Skwor, with whom she lived for the past five weeks. Mrs. Skwor suffered a stroke five weeks ago, and although she was physically invalided as the result, she was mentally keep and alert to the time of her sudden death on Saturday. Mrs. Skwor was born Anna Terch, on July 13, 1872 at Appleton, Wis. She came to Bessemer among the early pioneers in 1887, to help her uncle, Frank Schleis, who established one of the first boarding houses here in his building, later known as Adolph Johnson's First and Last Chance, on the Old County Road. Later Mrs. Skwor worked for Mittenthal, who operated a clothing store in the building now occupied by Bob's Cafe, which was erected by Mittenthal. Coming to Bessemer at the age of 15 years, Mrs. Skwor was greatly impressed by the activities of growth and development of the new community and was an authority on its early history. She recalled that, when she arrived the city was moving the cemetery from the courthouse site to its present Hillcrest location, to clear the area for the court house construction. Through the years she was active in the work of the growing community. On October 30, 1892, she was married, at her home in Medford, Wis., to Adolph Skwor, who came here in 1888 from Meribel (sic), Wis. Mrs. Skwor was a member of the St. Sebastian Church and was active in the Ladies Guild and other organizations. She was also a member of the Bohemian Fraternal Organization. Mrs. Skwor was predominantly a homemaker. After rearing three children, to adulthood, she reared six grandchildren. She is survived by one son, Raymond, Bessemer; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Peter Terch, Virginia, Minn; Mrs. Ed arcoe, Pocatella, Idaho; Mrs. J. A. Fifer, Vale, Ore; and Mrs. Rose Eaton, Lakeworth, Fla. She was precede in death by her husband December 1952; by one sone Louise, who died in 1921 as the result of injuries sustained in World War I; and by one daughter Mrs. Arthur Johnson, who died in 1932. Funeral services will be solemnized at the St. Sebastian Church Wednesday at 9 a, Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. The remains are at the J.J. Services were solemnized at the St. Sebastian Church at a requiem High mass celebrated by the Rev. Milton Vanitvelt. Interment was made in Hillcrest Cemetery. 872 | JANE LOUISE MENGES Four Killed In Two-Car Crash Accident Occurs Near Two Rivers Autos Collide at Unprotected Town Road Intersection in Early Evening. TWO RIVERS—A two-car crash at an unprotected town road intersection three miles north of this city in the early evening darkness Friday killed four persons and injured two others. Victims of the tragic accident were Herman W. Jaeckel, 69, and his wife, Nellie, both of 1618-19th St., Two Rivers, and Jo Ann M. Reis, 15, of Rt. 1, Mishicot. Injured were (names omitted for privacy)… Friday’s crash occurred at about 7:40 p.m. county police said, as the Jaeckel car was traveling north and the Reis vehicle was proceeding east. Both roads leading to the intersection, located west of Shambeau Sales and Service garage, were blacktopped. Police said there were no arterial signs at the intersection but that visibility in the area was good. Vehicle Cartwheeled According to the police investigation, the Reis car was struck in the right side by the Jaeckel vehicle in the eastbound lane near the center of the intersection. The vehicles then slapped together with the Jaeckel car coming to rest in the northeast ditch. The Reis vehicle cartwheeled and came to rest on its top in a field. Mr. and Mrs. Jaeckel were both thrown from their car and died almost instantly of multiple injuries. Jane Menges and Jo Ann Reis were pinned in the back seat area of the Reis Auto. She was born March 24, 1942, in Brown County, to Delbert and Pearl (White) Nelson. She attended school in Franklin, graduating from Franklin High School in 1960. She married J. Gregory Hellie on Aug. 26, 1961, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Franklin. She attended Lakewood Community College in White Bear Lake and earned her registered nurse degree. She worked as an RN for United Hospital in St. Paul and Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater. Following her retirement, they moved to Breezy Point. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she founded the Parish Nurse Program. She was president of the Breezy Point Women's Club and a member of the Pelican Lake Conservation Club, Sons of Norway, Hospice Nurse, and the Crow Wing County Health Board. Survivors include her husband of Breezy Point; a daughter, Kristin Hellie-Vogel, Mankato; a son, Joseph Hellie, Sartell; four grandchildren; and a sister, Carol Anderson, Gilbert, Ariz. Her parents, and a sister, Debra Nelson, died earlier. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes with Rev. David Stevens officiating. Mr. Ahrens was born June 8, 1896 in the Town of Two Rivers, son of the late John and Augusta Runge Ahrens. He graduated from Tannery Graded School, Washington High School, Two Rivers; Manitowoc County Normal School and River Falls College in 1919. He was a veteran of World War I. He married Helen Naser Oct. 18, 1924. They farmed at Route 1, Two Rivers since then. Mr. Ahrens was a longtime member and secretary of the Twin Rivers Coop of Mishicot for 25 years. He was a member and past president of the Mishicot Senior Citizens. He was a 4-H Leader for 21 years. Mr. Ahrens was a member of the Two Rivers American Legion and of the Westshore Sportsmans Club. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jack of Two Rivers and Gene of Sheboygan; a daughter, Mrs. Alan (JoAnn) Groll of Algoma; three sisters, Mrs. Ed (Myrtle) Kastrosky of Two Rivers, Mrs. Milton (Cora) Mueller of Manitowoc and Mrs. George (Mildred) Walters of Spokane, Washington; and 12 grandchildren. The Jindras will celebrate with a family d inner Saturday at Kubsch's Country Inn, Kellnersville. Mrs. Jindra, the former Anita Hablewitz, was born Oct. 20, 1904, at Manitwoc Rapids. Her husband was born Oct. 1, 1901, at Manitowoc. He also lived at Kingsbridge. The couple was married Feb. 7, 1923, at Waukegan, Ill. They have lived at Manitowoc since their marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Jindra have a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Betty Jane) Jarosh, Manitowoc, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Jindra was employed for 45 years at Mirro Aluminum Co. Manitowoc. The honored couple are members of Eagles Aerie 706 and enjiy (sic) playng cards as a hobby. She was born on March 7, 1934, in Mishicot, daughter of the late Micha el and Phoebe Stoeman Koch. She attended Holy Cross Parochial School and Mishic ot High School. For a number of years she was employed at Mirro Aluminum Compa ny as an assembler. Survivors include two sons; two daughters and sons-in-law; five brothe rs and two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, five sisters and three brothers-in-l aw; two grandchildren and two step grandchildren. She was preceded in dea th by a son, Paul, and a sister, Kathryn Gorny. Friends may call at Holy Cross Church after 9 a.m. on Tuesday until t he time of services. 890 | JOANN A. GROLL Mrs. Alan Groll, 44, of Algoma, died early Saturday morning in Memorial Hospital, Algoma, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Zion United Methodist Church, Mishicot. The Rev. Herold Gray will officiate and burial will be in Knollwood Memorial Gardens, Town of Kossuth, Manitowoc. Mrs. Groll, nee JoAnn Ahrens, was born Nov. 5, 1934, in the Town of Two Rivers, daughter of Mrs. Helene Naser Ahrens and the late Jerry Ahrens. She was married to Alan Groll June 23, 1956, in Zion United Methodist Church, Mishciot. They lived in Manitowoc Rapids until June, 1971, when they moved to Algoma. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Algoma. Survivors include her husband, Alan; two sons, Roger and Kevin, both of Algoma; a daughter, Debra of Algoma; her mother, Mrs. Helene Naser Ahrens of Two Rivers; and two brothers, Jack of Route 1, Two Rivers and Gene of Sheboygan. 891 | JOE LAMBERT Joseph Lambert, 80, retired Town of Mishicot farmer, died at his home in the village of Mishicot Thursday afternoon. He had been in failing health for several months. Funeral services will be held from the Specht Funeral Home at 9:00 a.m. and at 9:30 from the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mishicot. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Lambert, born on the Lambert homestead in Mishicot in 1864, drove logs on the Mishicot River from Tisch Mills to Two Rivers in the early days. He spent many years farming and for over 50 years was owner and operator of a threshing machine outfit. In 1892, he married Miss Lizziea Cretton and they moved to the farm three miles north of the village. In 1936, they retired and moved into the village. Two years ago, the couple observed their golden wedding anniversary at the home of a son, Edward. Survivors are the wife, two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Gerlach of star route, Denmark, Miss Rose Lambert of route 1, Two Rivers; five sons, Walter of King's Bridge, Jess and Edward of Mishicot, Arnold of route 1, Two Rivers, George of route 1, Mishicot; and 14 grandchildren. 898 | John J. Radey, 69, Dies Tuesday After Long Illness A resident of Lewistown since 1919, John J. Radey, 69, died Tuesday at St. Joseph's hospital. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. from St. Leo's Catholic church. Rosary will be recited at 8:30 at Creel's Chapel on Friday night. Mr. Radey was born May 16, 1880 in Kellnersville, Wisc., the son of Pete and Ann Radey. He spent his youth at Kellnersville, and on June 17, 1901 was married to Nettie Novak at that place. He became shop foreman at the Ellis Chambers (sic) firm in Milwaukee where they lived for six years. In 1914 Mr. and Mrs. Radey came to Montana spending a short time at Denton and then moving to Winnett where they homesteaded. After proving up their homestead, the couple came to Lewistown in the spring of 1919 and they have made their home here since. Mr. Radey had operated a painting contractor firm here since that time until ill health forced his retirement two years ago. He has been secretary-treasurer of the painters union in Lewistown for 18 years serving until two years ago. Mr. Radey was a member of St. Leo's Catholic church, the Holy Name Society and the Eagles Lodge. Survivors include his widow, Nettie, and three brothers, Frank, Joe, Emil, and two sisters, Annie and mary, all in Wisconsin. Preceding in death were his mother, father, a brother and a half sister.
