PORTAGE - Walter R. Jonas, age 82, of Portage, died on Friday, December 18, 1998, at his home in Portage.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Portage with the Rev. Alan Beck and the Rev. Todd Riordan co-officiating. Burial will be held on Monday at 4 p.m. in Randolph Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and at the church on Monday, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services at 1:30 p.m.
Walter Jonas was born on a farm near Rib Lake, Wisconsin on Jan. 4, 1916, the son of William and Hulda Jonas. On Nov. 11, 1943, he married the former Melba Marquart. They lived most of their entire married life in Portage. For many years he owned and operated the West Side Serivce Station in Portage, and also worked at Jenkins Motor Sales and Parts House (NAPA).
Walter served in the European Theater during World War II, and was a member of VFW Post No, 1707 and the American Legion Post No. 47. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Portage, and had served on various boards of the church during his life.
He is survived by his wife, Melba; one son, Douglas (Laurie) Jonas and three grandsons, Mark, Kevin and Andrew of Portage; three sisters, Anna Manthey of Pardeeville, Gertrude Mullin of Fox Lake, and Elsie Zeman of Manitowoc; three brothers, William Jonas of Pewaukee, Melvin Jonas of Fox Lake and Marvin Jonas of Fox Lake, many nieces and nephews, other near relatives and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ella, and two brothers, Erhardt and Harvey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Wally loved the outdoors. He enjoyed trout fishing especially, also duck and pheasant hunting, and, of course, his grandchildren and family.
