    Farmer Kills Mad Bull

Geo. Jindra, a farmer residing near the village of Mishicot, had an exciting experience with an ugly bull, last Friday evening. Jindra attempted to get a rope around the bull's neck and lead him to a barn. The bull was ugly and began to chase its owner about the premises. Jindra took refuge in a shed in which machinery was stored and crawled behind some machines. The bull was still after him. Jindra picked up a hammer that was lying on the fllor and threw it at the bull. The hammer hit just the right spot in the bull's head and the ferocious animal toppled over dead. -- Two Rivers Chronicle.

    Jos. Jindra Burns Out

Fire on Tuesday night completely destroyed the large store and other buildings belonging to Joseph Jindra in the town of Nasewaupee. The contents were also burned.

The fire was discovered about 11:30 by Miss Elizabeth Keogh, and the servant girl who lodged on the second floor. The alarm was promptly given, and a determined effort made by the household to extinguish the blaze. while they were in a measure successful, the fire appears to have found lodgement between the partitions where it could not be got at, and the occupants were at last compelled to leave the doomed building in such raiment as they had on their backs and barefooted. The snow lying deep on the ground they sought refuge in nearby homes-Joseph Ludwik and Matt Wochos.

Mr. Jindra in the vain endeavor to stay the ravages of the flames inhaled so much smoke and hot hair that he finally became overpowered, and in this emergency Dr. Kreutzer was summoned from Sawyer, arriving at the scene shortly after 1 a.m. He found the patient in such a critical condition, due to congestion, that he found it necessary to visit him several times since and at this writing he is not out of danger. Mr. Jindra is being cared for a the home of Mr. Ludwik.

The fire is supposed to have originated from a defective chimney, and as said heretofore, when discovered had made such progress as to render all human efforts at extinguishment quite futile. It is just possible that if the blaze had not been discovered by the ladies in the upper rooms in time that they as well as some of the other inmates would have been burned. As the buildings were large and of a very combustible character the blaze was one of the largest ever seen in that part of the county. There was a large hall connected with the establishment, this being 40x60 feet. The loss will probably aggregate $6,000 or more, and the insurance is $2,000, the risks being held by the Bank of Sturgeon Bay. The original buildings were erected by Chars. Stokes about twenty-five years ago.

Miss Keogh, the teacher, is a daughter of Edward Keogh, and a former resident of Forestville. Her parents now live in Green Bay. Owing to the hurried departure form the burning building in light attire, and loss of all her clothing, Miss Keogh was unable to teach school yesterday.

    Misc:
The town board met in special session last Monday and at the request of Joseph Jindra transferred his saloon license to the building owned by him on the opposite side of the road from the old structure destroyed by fire on December 14th. Mr. Jindra, who was more or less seriously affected by inhaling smoke and heat at the time of the blaze, has now quite recovered therefrom. He reports the loss of all his books and papers, which were left downstairs, the safe being on the second floor. He also lost $200 or more in silver and currency, the money having likewise been placed elsewhere than in the receptacle. On top of this a policy for $1,000 had expired a short time before the fire, it being his intention to renew same, but it appears he waited a little too long. His loss will foot up $8,000 at least, with $2,000 insurance, which is a pretty bad blow for the family certainly.

Joseph Jindra is building a saloon near the old site which was burned down some time ago. He will put up a larger buidling later, the one now being put up will only be for temporary use, for license could not be grated him in the cheese factory. It being too close to the school house.

BODY OF FILTRATION PLANT OPERATOR DISCOVERED IN TANK

Two Rivers, Wis-(AP)-The body of Walter Jindra, 42-year-old operator and plumber at the municipal filtration plant, was found in a water-filled filter tank last night.

Coroner Gerald A. Rau ordered an inquest for 2 p.m. today, remarking that " there are so many angles to the case that I refuse to make any statements until after the inquest."

Meanwhile, Chief of Police John J. Rebman went to Madison for tests of Jindra's blood and urine.

Two men and a woman, who Sheriff Norman Berkedal said were believed to have been with Jindra early last night, were detained for questioning at the county jail in Manitowoc.

August Gripe, watchman at the waterworks plant, discovered Jindra's body about 9 p.m., three and a half hours after Jindra's tour of duty ended.

Jindra, married and the father of two children, had been employed at the plant since its completion in 1935. He was a past commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

Jindra Death due to Drowning, Jury finds

Two Rivers, Wis-(AP)- Walter Jindra, 44, operator and plumber at the municipal filtration plant whose body was found in a filter tank Wednesday night, came to his death by drowning, a coroner's jury decided late yesterday.

Two men and a woman, who had been held as material witnesses, were released following the verdict.

Jindra's body was found by a night watchman more than three hours after the plant ordinarily closed for the night.

Chief of Police John J. Rebman said a thorough investigation of all circumstances surrounding Jindra's death would be made, adding:

"There are some loose ends remaining after the coroner's jury verdict of death by drowning which have to be looked into to determine if any criminal action is warranted."

The city council expressed itself in favor of an autopsy at city expense. City Attorney F.W. Dicke was ordered to proceed.

Although the verdict of the coroner's jury did not refer to accidental drowning, District Attorney Patrick Dewane said there was anything other than accidental.

Lie Detector Will Be Used in Death Case

Manitowoc, Wis.-Mysterious circumstances surround the investigation into the death of Walter Carroll, proprietor of a Two Rivers filling station, who died Thursday, three days after he had his skull fractured after being hit by a car driven by Mrs. Ray Senglaub, Two Rivers.

Mr. and Mrs. Senglaub are now in Chicago, where they were taken by District Attorney Patrick Dewane and Chief of Police J.J. Rebman of Two Rivers for a lie detector test.

The district attorney said every effort is being made to "get to the bottom of the case".

Though no official statement has been made, the filtration plant death of Walter Jindra is being stirred up again in connection with the Carroll case. Jindra's body, clad only in socks and underwear, was found in the filtration plant tank on March 27.

Many of the same people questioned in the Carroll death were involved in the Jindra case. Drowning was the official reason given for Jindra's death, but no definite explanation of how Jindra came to be in the tank was ever uncovered.

Lie Detector Indicates Death was Accidental

Manitowoc-Lie detector tests given to Mr. and Mrs Walter Senglaub, Two Rivers, showed that the death of Walter Carroll "was an accident in every sense of the word," District Attorney Patrick Dewane was informed Thursday.

Carroll died of a skull fracture last Thursday after he was apparently hit by a car driven by Mrs. Senglaub. The experts further declared that Senglaub "has no further information concerning the drowning of Jindra (Walter Jindra Two Rivers filtration plant employe whose body was found in the bottom of a water vat last March) and that he had nothing to do with his wife's accident.

The Senglaubs were examined in Chicago when they volunteered to undergo the tests. The Senglaubs drove to Chicago in their own car where they m et Dewane and Police Chief J.J. Rebman, Two Rivers, Tuesday.

Dewane announced Thursday that he and Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, have decided to hold an inquest into Carroll's death Monday morning.

Joseph Jindra, Nasewaupee, Gilbert Vetting, Egg Harbor, and Elmer Tweedale of Sevastopol Killed.

The lives of three more of Door county's brave boys have been given to their country in defense of its honor and ideal of a world democracy.

In the mail on Saturday a letter was received from a friend stating that Joseph Jindra had fallen in the second day of the big offensive and died later while being removed to the rear.

No word of the death has been received from official sources so that the letter was a great shock and surprise to the afflicted relatives as there was an air of uncertainty about whether it was really true.

The news of the death of Private Jindra was received in the following letter to his sister:
Somewhere in France, Aug. 15, 1918

    Miss Anna Jindra:
Kind Friend:--No doubt you will be quite surprised to hear from me, as I am unknown to you. But I was a very intimate friend of your brother Joseph and one of his last words was to write to his parents and friends at home and them where and how it happened.

You have probably heard by this time that your brother was killed in action about July 19th toward Soissons. He pulled through the first day OK but on the morning of the 19th was severely wounded and after he was taken to the first aid station and was being evacuated to the rear he died. He was buried with military honors in a small town in France, the name of which I am not allowed to mention. He left many friends in the company and regiment, who all regret his death.

I have some letters from his friends and yourself which he left and if you care for them I will forward them to you. I remain,
    Your unknown friend.

Private Joseph Jindra was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jindra of Nasewaupee. He was born in that town on July 31, 1893 being 25 years old at the time of his death. He was a member of Co.F., Fifth Wis. Vol. which company was organized in this city in May 1917, being among the first to place his name on the roster of the organization. He leaves to mourn his loss his parents, three brothers and a sister, the latter being Harry, Clarence, Vincent and Anna.

Harry moved out to Montana and became a mustard seed farmer. I recall as a youth going on a family vacation to Montana. Our local butcher, Skwor, used Montana mustard seed in their sausage. We filled coolers with sausages of different types and took them with us on our Montana visit so Harry could taste the sausage with Montana mustard seed.

Big Mustard Crop in Sweet Grass Farming Region

Sweet Grass, Sept. 24-Farmers of northern Toole county have harvested one of the largest yielding crops of commercial mustard this fall that h as ever been grown in this region, giving them a neat income under the growing contract with the seed houses, which is said to be four cents a pound. Amil Klinert's mustard crop, east of sunburst, threshed out 1,500 pounds to the acre, and the Farr brothers crop, west of town, ran 1,250 pound s, and a number of other farmers in the territory report yields of a 1,0 00 pounds and over to the acre. The past few years, since this new crop h as been grown here under contract by the farmers, a field that produced 1, 000 pounds or better to the acre was an exceptionally good one, with about 500 pounds rated as an average yield.

Many fields of spring wheat sown on good summer fallow here in some of t he border districts in Toole county are running from 40 to 50 bushels to t he acre, it has been learned. Among the local farmers who report these bumper yields are Harry Tuma, Rudy Juderman and Ole Berkram. This goes to s how the skeptics that Toole County land here is still very productive after being under cultivation all these years, when the weatherman provides favorable moisture and growing conditions throughout the summer months as he did this year.

I confirmation sponsor was Harry Tuma, Sr., who lived most, if not al l, of his adult life in Cut Bank, Montana. He married Hazel Tuma in the early part of the 20th Century. They had several children, all of whom would be at least in their late 70s now.

One of them was named after his father. He married late, probably in the late 1950s, and had at least one child, who should be in his/her early 40s now. He was a crop duster, part time. I first flew with him when I was 6 years old.

Harry, Sr., died in the early 1960s in Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, M T.
