Last week we briefly reported the death on Monday, January 10, 1910, at the home of his son, Fritz Sporleder, in Sheridan Township, of Carl Sporleder, aged 91 years, five months and four days. He was one of the few men in this country to reach such an advanced age. The events that have passed in history during his long life made and unmade nations, and the great achievements of science and inventions that have revolutionized the world and the conditions of human life, were all brought about during the lifetime of this aged pilgrim.

Carl Sporleder was born at Dassel, Amt Einbeck, Province, Hanover, Germany, August 6, 1818. He was schooled there and was confirmed as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, which affiliation he maintained throughout the course of his long life of busy endeavor. At the age of 28, he was united in marriage to Miss Carolina Ernst and there survive as the issue of their union three sons, William Sporleder, Pierce, Nebraska, Fritz Sporleder, Carroll, Iowa, Henry Sporleder, Parsons, Kansas, and Mrs. John (Wilhelmine) Jonas, Two Rivers, Wisconsin. There also survive many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Departed came to America in 1871 settling in Will County, Illinois, where they resided until 1879, when they came to Carroll and he bought property in West Carroll (County). It was while living there that his faithful wife died 23 years ago, and since then he made his home with his sons, Henry and Fred. The funeral was conducted from Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Sheridan Township, at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, January 12th, Pastor Schmidt conducting the services. Interment took place at the cemetery adjoining the church. There was an unusually large attendance from the surrounding townships, including the town of Glidden and this city (Carroll), for departed was a man whom all liked and respected. He was a patriarch, at those feet of old those of younger years sat to listen to words of wisdom, the fruit of ripe years and experience. Time mellows one's views. He calmly regards men 's faults and failings with the charity denied to those whose blood flows firily (with fire) and who act from impulse rather than deliberation. The life of this venerable Christian, living by the rules of his faith year after year, rearing his family in the knowledge and fear of God; wh at a splendid example is it to emulate! His virtues should furnish the lamp to the darkness of spirit caused by sin. That his years, filled with virtue, goodness and good incentive, may continue to influence others to strive for a better life to seek the path of perfection and be able.

The body of Mrs. Fred Jonas, former resident of Two Creeks who died at Chicago, arrived here last night and was taken to Two Creeks where the funeral will be held tomorrow. Mrs. Jonas was well known in and about Two Rivers. Death was due to complications of diseases.

Will initially settled in the Chicago area and lived with his uncle where he was employed in a machine shop. Will subsequently moved to Joliet, Illinois and then Mokena, Illinois. The various news articles published at the time of their respective deat hs give different Illinois locations for their marriage: McKinney, Joliet and Mokena. They later moved to Carroll County, Iowa where they purchased a farm. The family appeared on the 1880 Grant, Carroll, Iowa Federal Census pg 6 family 57. In 1881, they moved to Pierce, Nebraska where they purchased a farm that was their home for 27 years until 1908.

They retired in the community of Pierce.

From Will's obit Deceased was possessed of that rugged character and spirit that made up the pioneers who developed a new country. He came here in 1881 and experienced the rigors and hardships of those early years. He was progressive and took a great interest in the affairs of state and community. He was loved for his friendliness and interest in his neighbor and fellow man. He was a Christian all of his life, being a member of the Lutheran faith. He was the oldest member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Pierce and faithful at tendant at all services of that congregation.

Marie and Will were considered pioneers in the settlement of the Pierce area. A picture of them, as well as the baptismal gown worn by their children at their baptism is on display at the Pierce Museum.


Schafkopt

Whenever there was a gathering of the Will and Marie Sporleder family for a birthday or holiday, the men usually passed the time playing card games. As a young child, Verna Sporleder Weber recalls the card game called "Schafkopt ." "Schaft" is the German word for sheep while the German word for head is "Kopt."

Verna remembers that Grandpa Will Sporleder's self-appointed task was to draw a sheep's head complete with curved horns with lines through them. As the game progressed, the lines were filled in and each mark had its own meaning as way of keeping score.

THE FIRST GENERATION
The William and Marie Berens Sporleder Family
Carl Friedreich William Sporleder was born June 8, 1848, in Dassel, Einbeck, Prowing, Hanover, Germany. He was commonly referred to as William or Will. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith while still living in Germany. Will migrated to the United States in 1866 at the age of eighteen. He initially settled in the Chicago area and lived with his uncle where he was employed in a machine shop.
Johanna Dorothea Berens was born January 2, 1854, at Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. She came to the United States with her parents at the age of three where she was schooled and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was commonly referred to as Marie.
Will subsequently moved to Joliet, Illinois and then Mokena, Illinois. Will and Marie were married June 19, 1872. The various news articles published at the time of their respective deaths give difference Illinois locations for their marriage; McKinney, Joliet, and Mokena. They later moved to Carroll County, Iowa where they purchased a farm. In 1881, they moved to Pierce, Nebraska where they purchased a farm that was their home for 27 years until 1908. They retired in the community of Pierce. Ten children were born to the marriage including sons Fred, John, William Henry, and Henry, as well as daughters Lena, Louise, Mary Sophia, Emma, Freda, and Ella.
Marie died November 18, 1927, at the age of 73. She had been in poor health for three years prior to her death. Will died in Pierce in 1935 at the age of 87. They are buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Pierce. At the time of his death, the local newspaper provided this revere description:

The Henry and Lena Sporleder Buckendahl Family
Lena Sporleder was born October 4, 1873, at Joliet, Illinois. At age two, she moved with her parents to Carroll, Iowa. Later, they moved to Pierce. She attended school and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran School east of Pierce.
Henry C. Buckendahl was born on March 27, 1867, at Hanover, Germany. He came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buckendahl, when he was three years of age. Information from the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Henry Senior was born in 1837 and died in 1922. His wife was born in 1841 and died in 1914. The family initially lived in Omaha, Nebraska and then homesteaded a farm six miles east of Pierce.
Henry and Lena were married on February 18, 1890, at St. John's Lutheran Church. To this marriage were born seven sons; Fritz Wilhelm (Fred), Carl, Hugo J., Otto, Theodore, Edward, and Ruben as well as two daughters, Lizzie and Rose.
Henry and Lena purchased a homestead tract seven miles east of Pierce and farmed until 1907. They then moved to Pierce and engaged in the hardware and implement business.
After serving on the Pierce city council, Henry was elected mayor for three terms. He served as the president of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Grain Company and the Pierce County Fair and Agricultural Association. He was a member of the Community Club. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Zion Lutheran Church. At the time of his death, the local newspaper's obituary noted he, "was a man of honor and integrity. He was square in his business dealings and to this fact might be attributed his success as a Pierce business man."
Henry suffered from diabetes for a number of years and underwent surgery to amputate his left leg. The shock of the operation caused him to die of a heart attack on August 16, 1932, at the age of 64. Lena died September 24, 1941, at the age of 67. She had been of ill health for more than a year and died because of a heart condition as well as other complications.

The Albert and Lizzie Buckendahl Koehn Family
Lizzie L. Buckendahl was born November 29, 1890, in Pierce. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John=s Lutheran Church, Pierce. On April 3, 1912, Lizzie married Albert Ernest Koehn who was born January 4, 1891, in Hadar, Nebraska. To this marriage was born Earl. After their marriage, Albert and Lizzie lived on a farm south of Wee Town. Later, they moved to Pierce where Albert was Chief of Police. He also worked several years for Buckendahl Bros. Albert died November 30, 1961, at age 70. Lizzie lived in the Pierce Manor from 1971 until her death March 22, 1979.
The Fritz and Martha Kiepke Buckendahl Family
Fritz Wilhelm (Fred) Buckendahl was born September 3, 1893, in Pierce, Nebraska. On December 8, 1915, he married Martha Elisabeth Adelinda Kiepke at the Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. Martha was born March 9, 1894, at the Kiepke homestead in Pierce County near Hadar. To this marriage were born Lulu Alvira, Arlene Edna, Hilda Lorene, Leon Dale, Lorene Mildred, and Jeanette. Fritz operated an implement business at Plainview before farming about one mile south of Wee Town and later east and south of Hoskins. He retired in 1953. Fritz and Martha were divorced in 1964. Martha lived with her daughter, Jeanette for about three years until she died November 21, 1969, at the age of 75. She is buried in the Zion Lutheran East Cemetery, Hoskins, Nebraska. Fritz died in May1964 at the age of 70.
The Edward and Rose Buckendahl Family
Rose Buckendahl was born December 14, 1896, in Pierce. On March 5, 1920, she married Edward Dunn who was born March 28, 1881. To this marriage were born Donald, Bonnie and James. Ed was the editor, owner, and publisher of the Pierce County Leader. Ed died May 20, 1946, at the age of 65. Rose lived in Pierce until 1945 when she moved to California to be with her children. She died May 11, 1972, at the age of 75, in North Hollywood, California.
The Hugo and Hazel Stack Buckendahl Family
Hugo J. Buckendahl was born November 30, 1898, in Pierce. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. After completing eighth grade, he attended Seward Concordia College where he received a teaching certificate. On April 3, 1921, Hugo married Hazel Stack who was born April 8, 1903. To this marriage was born Ethel. Hugo was the Pierce County Clerk for sixteen years. He was associated with a metal and drainage concern for twenty one years. He was a salesman for Armco Steel. Hazel worked at Brandeis Cafeteria and Emmanuel Hospital Cafeteria in Omaha. They lived Omaha, Norfolk and Fremont after leaving Pierce. Hugo died August 13, 1960, at the age of 61 from a heart attack. He is buried in Malvern, Iowa.
The Otto and Rose Hilgert Buckendahl Family
Otto Charles Buckendahl was born May 21, 1900, in Pierce. He was baptized and as a youth was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from high school and attended Concordia College at Steward, Nebraska. On September 24, 1922, Otto married Rose Hilgert who was born May 26, 1901. To this marriage was born Dale Edward on July 4, 1930. Also, a child was stillborn and another died in infancy. Otto had bookkeeping experience with the family's farm implement business in Pierce and worked for a variety of dealers trying to reorganize after the 1930's depression. Locations included Plainview, Sidney and Scottsbluff in Nebraska; Powell and Cheyenne in Wyoming; Sterling and Ft. Collins in Colorado. They lived in Scottsbluff when Otto died February 12, 1951, at the age of 49 when his car stalled in a snowstorm. Otto had gone to Cheyenne, Wyoming on a business trip and attempted to return home in the snowstorm. His car stalled and Otto tried to walk to a range house. His frozen body was found about a half mile from the house. Rose remained in Scottsbluff until 1955 when she moved to Boulder, Colorado to be near her son. She died in November 23, 1986, at the age of 85. Otto and Rose are buried in St. John's Cemetery east of Pierce.

Carl Buckendahl was born in 1902. He married Hattie Schwartz Nitz who was born in 1900. Carl died April 30, 1980, in Santa Ana, California. Hattie died in 1986.
The Theodore and LaVerne Mordhorst Buckendahl Family
Theodore Buckendahl was born August 2, 1904. On May 18, 1933, he married LaVerne Mordhorst who was born October 12, 1911. To this marriage were born Judith, Frances, and Gerald. Theodore and LeVerne were retired farmers in the Pierce area. Theodore died October 30, 1992, at the age of 88.

Edward Buckendahl was born January 15, 1907, at Pierce. On November 26, 1932, he married Marjorie Alexander who was born October 13, 1913, at Plainview, Nebraska. To this marriage was born Gene. Edward was a partner with his brother, Ruben, in the Buckendahl Brothers implement business since 1932. Ed died July 26, 1969, at the age of 62. Marjorie died November 3, 1978, at age 65.
The Ruben and Lorinda Voecks Buckendahl Family
Ruben Buckendahl was born October 9, 1911. On June 2, 1943, he married Lorinda Voecks who was born December 27, 1913. To this marriage was born Dian Kay. They resided in Pierce and were co-owners of Buckendahl Bros. John Deere from 1946 until retirement in 1977. Ruben served in the Army from September, 1942 until January, 1946, in England and Belgium. Ruben died December 24, 1989, at the age of 78 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Lorinda died June 18, 1994, at the age of 80.

The Earl and Clara Wagner Koehn Family
Earl Arthur Koehn was born November 12, 1912. He graduated from Pierce High School in 1931. On July 2, 1936, he married Clara Wagner who was born July 31, 1917. To this marriage were born Ethel and a daughter, Betty Ann, who died in infancy. Earl and Clara resided in Pierce where Earl was employed by Buckendahl Hardware and Implement. In 1941, he purchased the plumbing business from the hardware store and operated it until the time of his illness that resulted in his death. Earl died November 11, 1974, at the age of 61. He is buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Clara has since remarried.

Lulu Alvira Buckendahl was born November 22, 1916, at Pierce, Nebraska. She graduated from Pierce High School in 1934, and taught school until her untimely death on July 11, 1937, at the age of 19 at a Norfolk hospital. She is buried in the Zion Lutheran East Cemetery, Hoskins, Nebraska.

Arlene Edna Buckendahl was born December 31, 1917, at Pierce, Nebraska. Her daughter, Janice Faye, was born on June 29, 1938. Janice was raised by Arlene's parents.
The Vito and Hilda Buckendahl Kizas Family
Hilda Lorene Buckendahl was born March 3, 1919, at Plainview, Nebraska. On September 8, 1947, she married Vito Alfonso Kizas who was born February 8, 1918, at Donora, Pennsylvania. They were married at the Court House in Minneapolis. Vito died October 22, 1990, at the age of 72.
The Leon and Mardelle Sutton Buckendahl Family
Leon Dale Buckendahl was born November 9, 1920, at Plainview, Nebraska. He attended Pierce County schools until grades seven and eight that he completed at the Lutheran school in Pierce. On April 18, 1948, Leon married Mardelle Sutton who was born January 19, 1925. To this marriage were born Marcia Anne, Mary Lynne, Valerie Lee, Shari Jean, Scott, and Russel. Leon served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. After their marriage, Leon and Mardelle farmed near Wee Town and McLean, Nebraska. Leon died October 22, 1989, at the age of 68. He is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery at Norfolk.

Lorene Mildred Buckendahl was born August 26, 1922, at Plainview, Nebraska. On August 26, 1922, she married Ronald Painter who was born November 21, 1924, in Miller South Dakota. They were married in a Lutheran church in Omaha. To this marriage were born Robert Ronald on May 17, 1958 and Rita Lorene on December 12, 1960.

Jeanette Lulu Buckendahl was born November 6, 1937, in Wayne, Nebraska. On September 19, 1964, she married Charles Madison Lucas who was born October 8, 1927. They were married at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Norfolk, Nebraska. To this marriage were born Heather Lyn on February 15, 1969, and Brett David on November 26, 1970. Charles died June 1, 1994, at the age of 66. He is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bonnie Dunn was born August 8, 1923. On February 23, 1942, she married William Orr who was born December 18, 1923. To this marriage was born William, Jr. on April 5, 1943. He died September 2, 1988, at the age of 45. William, Sr. died in 1964. Later, Bonnie married George Nigro who was born December 14, 1922.

Ethel Jeanette Buckendahl was born May 6, 1925, in Pierce, Nebraska. On June 22, 1947, she married Lee Roy Robbins in Omaha, Nebraska. To this marriage was born Jeanette on February 8, 1950. Ethel graduated from the Methodist School of Nursing in Omaha in 1946. Ethel passed away October 24, 1962, at the age of 37 after a lengthy illness caused by leukemia. She is buried in Malvern, Iowa.

Louise Sporleder was born July 4, 1875, at Kellogg, Iowa. On May 3, 1898, she married William Koehler who was born July 3, 1875. The couple established their home on the Koehler farm east of Pierce. Three children, Esther, Meta, and Martin, were born to this marriage. On September 29, 1901, William unexpectedly died at age 26 of "consumption@ that is now better known as tuberculosis.
Louise was left with the task of raising three young children as well as managing the farm. At the time of her death on July 16, 1942, at the age of 67, the local newspaper observed in reverence, "Her life was one of hardship, sorrow and sacrifice, but she gave it willingly and with a cheerful heart."

Esther Koehler was born March 6, 1897. On February 8, 1917, she married Edward Luebe who was born September 26, 1897. To this marriage were born Loren Albert, Orville John Martin, Elvira, Waleen Carl, Eldreth Mae, Delmar Marben, Mardell Lavonne, and Duane Harold. The family lived in the Pierce area. Edward died July 31, 1977, at the age of 79. Esther died December 26, 1978, at the age of 81. They are buried in the Prospect View Cemetery south of Pierce.
The Luebe Brothers
The Luebe brothers numbered five. They acquired nicknames or were referred to by other than their first name. Loren was known as Tony. Orville was referred to as John when he was young and Orville later in life. Waleen was called Tobe. Delmar was characterized as Shadow. Duane was known as Dode. All of the brothers, except Duane, served in the military during World War II.

The family lived in the Pierce area where Loren was a truck driver. Loren died April 6, 1985, at the age of 67. Rose died October 8, 1994, at the age of 70. They are buried in the Catholic Cemetery.

To this marriage were born Gayle Lynne, Kent John, Kirk Jay, Debra Susan, Diane Renee, Julie Ann, and Jane Beth. Orville died July 4, 1992, at the age of 73. Bernice died April 11, 1996, at the age of 79. They are buried in the Prospect View Cemetery.

Earl died on May 5, 1995, at the age of 71.

Fred Sporleder, Sr. was born June 14, 1877, in Carroll, Iowa. At age eight, he moved with his parents to Pierce. In 1906, he married Dora Siemsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Siemsen. To this marriage were born Mary, Clarence, and Fred, Jr. The elder Fred died of typhoid fever on August 19, 1908, at age 31.

Son John's Family
John Sporleder, Sr.
John Sporleder, Sr. was born July 7, 1879, in Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended parochial school in Pierce county.
On May 20, 1903, John married Emma Christina Meier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meier. The marriage was performed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Randolph by Rev. H. Streld. To this marriage were born Carl, Mamie, and Edgar.
The family made their home on a farm three miles east of Pierce. Emma died of typhoid-pneumonia at the age of 24 in 1908. Her condition was weakened by her caring for her husband who had contacted the same illness. Her brother, Louie, helped the family during their illness, contacted the disease, and later died.
John gave up farming and worked in Pierce at the Buckendahl Hardware Store. On February 27, 1914, John married Christena Lena Poignee. She was born February 18, 1896, in Moville, Iowa. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. George Poignee. The family then returned to farming. To this marriage were born Roy, Verna, Raymond, Wanda, and John, Jr. In 1927, the family moved to a farm west of Pierce where they farmed until 1945. John and Christena then retired to Pierce.
Christena died October 18, 1956, at the age of 60. John died September 3, 1960, at the age of 81 after he had undergone surgery for a ruptured appendix.

The Carl and Lena Papstein Sporleder Family
Carl Wilhelm Heinrich Sporleder was born June 15, 1904. On March 27, 1938, he married Lena Emma Dora Freida Papstein who was born November 17, 1917. To this marriage were born Phyliss Ilene, Jerrine Martha, and LaDonna Mae who was born February 21, 1946. Carl died September 26, 1978, at the age of 74.
The Fred and Mamie Sporleder Kluender Family
Mamie Sporleder was born November 14, 1905, in Pierce County, Nebraska. She attended school in Pierce County. On May 25, 1925, she married Fred Kluender who was born in 1905. They were married in Yankton, South Dakota. To this marriage were born Elden, Gene, Dean, and Harlan. They farmed for many years in Pierce and Wayne counties in Nebraska. In 1973, they retired and moved to Norfolk where they are members of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church. In 1996, Mamie moved to the Pierce Manor where she died on March 17, 1998, at the age of 92. Burial services were held on March 20, 1998, at Zion Lutheran Church, Pierce. She is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
A 70th Wedding Anniversary
On May 5, 1995, Fred and Mamie Kluender observed their 70th wedding anniversary with a card shower. They were honored by their sons Elden of Denver, Colorado and Dean and Gene of Aurora, Colorado; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The Edgar and Edith Butler Sporleder Family
Edgar Henrich Ludwig Sporleder was born May 12, 1908. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. On September 11, 1931, he married Edith Butler who was born October 17, 1909. To this marriage were born Roland C., LaVonne, Delilah, and LaVerne G. The family farmed in the Pierce and Osmond area. After Edith's death in 1978, Edgar moved to the town of Pierce where he was a resident of Pierce Manor until his death on April 3, 1996, at age of 87. Edith and Edgar are buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk.

Roy Sporleder was born April 15, 1915. On September 24, 1937, he married Sarah Schiffner who was born April 10, 1916. To this marriage were born Betty Ann on June 27, 1938; Joyce on November 6, 1939; Leroy on April 22, 1944; and Jerald on March 13, 1950.

Wanda Sporleder was born January 4, 1921. She married Joseph D. Story. To this marriage were born Anita, Donna, Darrell, and Cindy. Anita married Ronald Werth and lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. They have two children. Darrell married Faye Hinken. They have three sons. Donna married Dave Hinken. They have two daughters. Wanda died July 6, 1972, at the age of 51.

I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a Germ an-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1 920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Editi on of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. I have not changed the pla ce or name spellings, except where indicated. Information in brackets a nd notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

Fritz Sporleder

Mr. Sporleder was born on 1 April 1851 in Dassel, District of Einbec k, Hannover [Hanover]. When he was three years old, his parents moved to t he District of Lüneburg, where he attended school in Drögeniendorf and w as confirmed in the local parish-church. He then took up agriculture and w orked on various farms in the area until he was 18 years old. At this tim e, he carried out his long-held plan to emigrate to the Free States of Nor th America. He then crossed the ocean, and arriving in America, he made h is way first to Will County, Illinois, where he again took up the plow a nd worked four years for other farmers. He then went into farming for hims elf, and rented a farm which he operated for five years. On 26 January 187 9, he married Miss Franziska Werner, a well-brought-up and upright young w oman, who was born on 26 March 1858 in Seifertshausen, District of Rodenbu rg [possibly Rotenburg], in Kurhessen. In 1883, Mr. Sporleder and his you ng wife moved to Grant Township, Carroll County, Iowa, where he purchas ed 80 acres of land. He took up residence on this farm, built a fine hom e, and good stalls and barns, and now and then increased his real estat e, so that he now calls 320 acres of the best land his own, which by virt ue of its fine location is among the best of properties. Mr. Sporleder a nd his wife are honest German-Americans and enjoy an excellent reputatio n. This very happy marriage has produced three children, named Anton, Arno ld and Maria.

NOTES: Dassel is a town about 40 miles south of Hannover. It is abo ut 10 miles west of Einbeck. Seifertshausen is in central Germany, abo ut 20 to 25 miles southeast of Kassel and about 5 miles northeast of Roten burg.

Fred Sporleder of Lidderdale Passes Away. Dies of Pneumonia; Funeral Servi ces Held Wednesday. Fred Sporleder, well known Carroll County pioneer, di ed at his home in Lidderdale at 8:40 o’clock Saturday evening after a thre e-day illness of pneumonia. Short services at the family home at 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon were fo llowed by final rites at the Lutheran Church in Lidderdale with the Re v. R. Hermann officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery at Lidderda le. Born In Germany. Mr. Sporleder was born in Dassel, Hanover, Germany, Apr il 1, 1851, a son of Carl and Caroline Sporleder. When he was three yea rs old, his parents moved to the Lüneburg Heath, where he attended scho ol and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was 17 when he made the ocean voyage to America locating at New Leno x, Will County, Illinois where he worked as a farm hand for eight years. Mr. Sporleder was married on January 26, 1879 to Miss Franziska Werner, al so a native of Germany. They lived on a farm in Illinois until 1883 when t hey came to Carroll County to make their home on a farm four miles northea st of Carroll. As time went on, they increased their holdings and continu ed to live in the same community until their retirement from farming in 19 20. Since that time, they have lived in Lidderdale. Married 58 Years. On January 26, 1929, surrounded by their children and gr andchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Sporleder celebrated their golden wedding annive rsary. The event was a memorable one in their lives. Mr. Sporleder was a life-long and faithful member of the Lutheran Churc h. He had been a member of the Lidderdale congregation since 1885. Survivors include his widow, two sons, Anton Sporleder of Lidderdale and A rnold Sporleder of Carroll, one daughter, Mrs. John Kurth (Anna) of Lidder dale, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The obituary is from the Carroll Harold Times. Fred was also known as Fri tz and his date of death was January 9, 1937 at the age of 85.

Notes:

His family later moved to Iowa and then Wisconsin. William's education only extended to about the second or third grade. When he was older, he went to work in a chair factory in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Later, he moved to Rib Lake, Wisconsin where he met Hulda Louise Klausch.

William and Hulda were farmers and cleared the land in Rib Lake.

In 1920, the family moved to Cambria, WI and later Fox Lake, Wisconsin

William Henry Jonas, 76 passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ella Davis, early Monday morning. Death was attributed to a heart condition.

The deceased was born August 7, 1874, in Illinois, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jonas. While he was still a baby the family moved to Two Rivers, Wis. On February 21, 1905 he married Hulda Klusch, and following his marriage moved to Medford. In 1920 he moved to Cambria and in 1940 to a farm near Fox Lake. His wife preceded him in death January 6, 1946 and since then he has made his home with his daughter. He was actively employed until the time of his death working for his son-in-law, Carl Davis, a building contractor.

Survivors are six sons and four daughters, Mrs. Elsie Zeman, Manitowoc, Mrs. Ella Davis, Fox Lake, Earhardt, Rudolph, Mrs. Gertrude Mullin, Fox Lake, Mrs. Anna Manthey, Pardeeville, Walter, Portage, Melvin, Beaver Dam, Marvin Fox Lake, William, Waukesha, and Harvey, Beaver Dam. Also surviving are; three brothers, Fred, Two Riers(sic), Henry, Waukesha and Walter, Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Herman Tess of Sturgeon Bay and Mrs. Winton Raper of Chicago; and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in the city. Rev. G. W. Zunker officiated and interment was at Waushara cemetery.

Emmath was born in Marshall or Lynd, Lyon County, Minnesota. The family then moved to North Dakota with Fred's brothers Herman and John . The men became partners on a farm and appear on the 1910 Census for Pierce Co. North Dakota. (the county Harry and maybe Harvey were born). Howard, Ida's first son was living with them at the time, Adeline was not. Fred was born in Devil's Lake, Ramsey County North Dakota (Did the family move? or were they visiting?) In 1920 Fred was unemployed living with the family on Ida's brother's farm in Birch Coulee Township, Morton, Renville County Minnesota.

Fred lived in Bird (Island) at the time of his father's death in 1934.

According to William F. Blum, sometime after Oct. 1934 (after the birth of his grandson Winton) Fred T. Sr., Emmath and Martha (Blum) Jonas their baby son Winton, Fred W. Jr. and Lydia lived on the farm of William F. Blum in Gibson Twp., Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. This was at the height of the depression. The Jonas Family lived with the Blum's for about 6 weeks. (I assume this was around the time of the death of his father)

Fred T. Jonas, 84, of Rt. 1, Mishicot, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Monday morning at the home of a son, Harry, with whom he had made his home since 1943. He had been in failing health for about a year.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mishicot, the Rev. David Worgull officiating. Burial will be in Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers.
Mr. Jonas was born Oct. 2, 1875, at Kellogg, Jasper County, Iowa, a son of the late Fred and Wilhelmina Sporletter Jonas. He married the former Ida White at Vesta, Minn., Nov. 16, 1905. She died Sept. 26, 1923. Mr. Jonas celebrated his 80th birthday in 1955 with all members of his family present. He farmed in Minnesota until his retirement in 1941.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lydia Holloran of Chicago and Mrs. Irene Schmitz of Kenosha; three other sons, Emmath of Two Rivers, Harvey of San Antonia, Texas, and Fred of Rt. 1, Mishicot; two sisters, Mrs. Winton Raper of Chicago and Mrs. Herman Tess of Sturgeon Bay; a brother, Walter of Chicago; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Friends may call at Klein & Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, Two Rivers, after 2 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday when the casket will be taken to the church where the body will lie in state until the time of service.

He worked in a chair factory in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Later, he moved to Rib Lake, Wisconsin where he met his wife.

The date of Louis's death is unknown. He was hunting when he disappeared. He was found several months later in the February time period by a trapper. The trapper had noticed a wolf circling around a certain area in the woods, as if to avoid something. Upon investigation, the trapper discovered Louis. There remains a mystery whether Louis committed suicide , was killed by an accidental shooting or was shot by another hunter.

From the Rib Lake Herald published in Taylor County Star News Dec. 13, 1907 Louis Jonas, one of the farmers living east of this village, has not been seen or heard of since last Friday morning. It was his habit of going before his mates and hunt rabbits until they came. Last Friday when his mates came to the place where they worked, they found his dinner pail and coat but the man and his gun were no where to be seen. They did not pay much attention to him, thinking he was off a little ways and would return. When he failed to show up in the evening a search for him was organized and he has not shown up yet.

Louis Jonas' Body Found

Readers of the Herald remember that we recorded the sudden disappearance of Louis Jonas on the 26th of November, last. On that day he went to work in the morning the same as usual, to chop wood, and left the house about half an hour ahead of his companions. When they arrived at the place where they worked, they saw his dinner pail and coat in its usual place but he was not there. As he was in the habit of taking his rifle along and hunting early in the morning, they paid little attention to it and thought he was in pursuit of some game. But when evening came and he did not appear, they became somewhat worried and instituted a search for him. This was continued for several days and the woods was full of men the following Sunday who were trying to locate him. Nothing has been heard of him until last Tuesday.

Last Tuesday Andrew Berg was out hunting in the vicinity of what is known as Case's homestead and in following a wolf trail he came upon the body of a dead man. He notified the authorities at once and an inquest was ordered by the district attorney. Therefore Justice of the Peace George Clark went out to hold inquest and identify the body if possible. The jury found that the man was Louis Jonas, who disappeared last November, and that he came to his death by shooting himself in the head with the rifle. The body was found one mile southeast from where he worked with his companions in November; it lay flat on its back, the gun between the knees and both hands were clasped around it. The ball entered the brain in the left side of the forehead. The calibre was 36-56. The body was brought to this village in the evening and placed in Case & Pole's undertaking establishment, where it will be prepared for burial. His parents at Manitowoc were notified. Date for the funeral has not yet been set. He has a brother living in the township of Rib Lake and leaves a wife and one child. What prompted him to take his own life is not certain, although there are many theories. He is said to have lived in peace with his family. It is a sad affair.

The funeral of Louis Jonas was held from the home of the deceased Sunday afternoon and was attended by people from far and near. Rev. Mark Peckham, pastor of the Christian church, conducted the services and choir of his church sang the anthems. Interment was made in the Rib Lake cemetery.

Last week Mr. Fred Jonas of the Town of Two Creeks was notified by telegraph that the mystery connected with the disappearance of his son, Louis, who resided at Rib Lake had been cleared up by the finding of his body. From reports received here it appears that he disappeared on the 30th of November last and a general search was instituted for him which proved futile and not a trace of him was discovered until last week when the news was telegraphed here that his body had been found and that he had been shot, whether by accident or otherwise the dispatch did not state.

Henry is listed as 30 years old Louise is listed as 28 Morris is listed as 3 and 4/12 Henriette is listed as 2 1/12 Census was taken Feb 7th &8th 1920. Henry is listed as owning his own farm.

The Granite Factory was located on the Whiskey Road about midway between the Church and the store. Henry Jonas was the first cheese maker and Fred Huebner the last one. When it closed its factory doors, it was made into a residential house. The house burned. Now a mobile home is on the lot.

Emil C. Jonas Dies Suddenly at 56 in City

Schroeder Mill Employee is Victim of Heart Attack

Emil C. Jonas, 56, died at his home at 1307 Hawthorne ave., early yesterday afternoon shortly after suffering a heart attack.

Funeral serves will be held at Klein & Stangel, Inc., funeral home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 and at the St. John's Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, Rev. W. G. Haase officiating. Interment will be in Forest View cemetery. The body will be in state at the funeral home 7 o'clock tonight until the time of the service.

Mr. Jonas was born on the Two Creeks farm of his parents, Fred and Wilhelmina Sporleder Jonas, on July 21, 1893. He spent his early life on the homestead farm and was married to the former Martha Schmidt of Two Creeks in 1918. They moved to a farm in Two Creeks and lived there until five years ago when the family moved to Two Rivers. Here Mr. Jonas was employed by the Schroeder mill until his death yesterday.

Survivors include his wife, two sons Alfred and Arnold, both at home; fo ur brothers, William, of Fox Lake, Wis., Fred residing in Illinois, Henry of Wausau, and Walter of Chicago; and two sisters, Mrs. Herman Tess, of Sturgeon Bay, and Mrs. Winton Raper of Chicago.

Mr. Chiber made cheese here for many years. Walter Jonas was its first cheese maker and Melvin Sanders was the last one. It is now the home of the Tony Kittles.

The Henry and Lena Sporleder Buckendahl Family
Lena Sporleder was born October 4, 1873, at Joliet, Illinois. At age two, she moved with her parents to Carroll, Iowa. Later, they moved to Pierce. She attended school and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran School east of Pierce.
Henry C. Buckendahl was born on March 27, 1867, at Hanover, Germany. He came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buckendahl, when he was three years of age. Information from the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Henry Senior was born in 1837 and died in 1922. His wife was born in 1841 and died in 1914. The family initially lived in Omaha, Nebraska and then homesteaded a farm six miles east of Pierce.
Henry and Lena were married on February 18, 1890, at St. John's Lutheran Church. To this marriage were born seven sons; Fritz Wilhelm (Fred), Carl, Hugo J., Otto, Theodore, Edward, and Ruben as well as two daughters, Lizzie and Rose.
Henry and Lena purchased a homestead tract seven miles east of Pierce and farmed until 1907. They then moved to Pierce and engaged in the hardware and implement business.
After serving on the Pierce city council, Henry was elected mayor for three terms. He served as the president of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Grain Company and the Pierce County Fair and Agricultural Association. He was a member of the Community Club. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Zion Lutheran Church. At the time of his death, the local newspaper's obituary noted he, "was a man of honor and integrity. He was square in his business dealings and to this fact might be attributed his success as a Pierce business man."
Henry suffered from diabetes for a number of years and underwent surgery to amputate his left leg. The shock of the operation caused him to die of a heart attack on August 16, 1932, at the age of 64. Lena died September 24, 1941, at the age of 67. She had been of ill health for more than a year and died because of a heart condition as well as other complications.

April 26, 1971 - Carroll Daily Times - Lidderdale - Arnold August Sporledcr, 81, of Lidderdale died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday, April 25, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, where he had been a patient for three weeks. He was a lifelong resident of this area and a retired farmer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lidderdale, with the Rev. Albert T. Bostelmann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, under direction of the Dabn-Woodhouse Funeral Home of Carroll, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Sporleder, son of Frederick and Francis Werner Sporleder, was born March 15, 1890, in Grant Township, Carroll County. He served in World War I, and farmed on the same farm on which he was born.

On Oct. 28, 1919, he was married at Carroll to Gretchen Faber, who survives. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lidderdale, and a charter and 50-year member of Maurice Dunn Post No. 7, American Legion at Carroll.

Surviving with his wife are four children, Frederick A. Sporleder of Carroll, Mrs. Theodore (Martha) Hoemann of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Harold (Catherine) Rudi of Tucson, Ariz., and Robert C. Sporleder of Charter Oak; also 12 grandchildren.

One grandchild, one brother, and one sister preceded him in death.

Mrs. Mullin was born on Dec. 29, 1911, in Rib Lake, the fourth child of 1 0, to William and Hulda (Klausch) Jonas. She was married in 1936 to William L. Mullin in Fox Lake.

Mrs. Mullin's family moved to the Cambria area in 1920, where she attended Healy Country School. In 1946, she and her husband moved onto the family farm where they farmed until their retirement in 1962, and moved back to F ox Lake, where she resided since. She was employed in the research lab of Green Giant Canning Co., Fox Lake, for 26 years. She was a member of the Fox Lake American Legion Auxiliary Post 521, past member of the Fox Lake Women's Club, the HOA Club, and the Stitch and Chatter Club. She volunteered for many years for American Red Cross blood drives in Fox Lake , serving on the kitchen committee. She was a devoted member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fox Lake, its Ladies Aid, the Missionary Society and World Missions.

On 05 Mar. 2001 Elaine Jonas Chaloupka made this statement about her Uncle Harvey: "Harvey Jones was an Air Force Col. he died when he was around 50. ( I think) He died in Texas from heart trouble. He had a wife named Dorothy and a son Byron, who also died at the age of 50. Aunt Dot is still alive I think. She was asked if she ever met Harvey: "Yes I met them they were very nice and talked with a southern accent. only saw them twice in my life. Aunt Dot is an American Indian." She was asked if Harvey was older than Frederick: "He was older than Grandpa. I think the oldest or second oldest. Grandpa was the youngest boy."

Grass Fire at Fremont causes Minor Damage

Weyauwega-The West Bloomfield Fire Department was called to the Elwyn Jonas farm, route 2 Fremont, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday to extinguish a grass fire.

The Wisconsin Conservation Department and the Weyauwega Fire Department were also called for assistance.

Damage was minor according to Norman Schoenick, fire warden.

Lizzie L. Buckendahl was born November 29, 1890, in Pierce. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John=s Lutheran Church, Pierce. On April 3, 1912, Lizzie married Albert Ernest Koehn who was born January 4, 1891, in Hadar, Nebraska. To this marriage was born Earl. After their marriage, Albert and Lizzie lived on a farm south of Wee Town. Later, they moved to Pierce where Albert was Chief of Police. He also worked several years for Buckendahl Bros. Albert died November 30, 1961, at age 70. Lizzie lived in the Pierce Manor from 1971 until her death March 22, 1979.

Fritz Wilhelm (Fred) Buckendahl was born September 3, 1893, in Pierce, Nebraska. On December 8, 1915, he married Martha Elisabeth Adelinda Kiepke at the Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. Martha was born March 9, 1894, at the Kiepke homestead in Pierce County near Hadar. To this marriage were born Lulu Alvira, Arlene Edna, Hilda Lorene, Leon Dale, Lorene Mildred, and Jeanette. Fritz operated an implement business at Plainview before farming about one mile south of Wee Town and later east and south of Hoskins. He retired in 1953. Fritz and Martha were divorced in 1964. Martha lived with her daughter, Jeanette for about three years until she died November 21, 1969, at the age of 75. She is buried in the Zion Lutheran East Cemetery, Hoskins, Nebraska. Fritz died in May1964 at the age of 70.

On April 18, 1948, Leon married Mardelle Sutton who was born January 19, 1925. To this marriage were born Marcia Anne, Mary Lynne, Valerie Lee, Shari Jean, Scott, and Russel. Leon served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. After their marriage, Leon and Mardelle farmed near Wee Town and McLean, Nebraska. Leon died October 22, 1989, at the age of 68. He is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery at Norfolk.

Hazel worked at Brandeis Cafeteria and Emmanuel Hospital Cafeteria in Omaha. They lived Omaha, Norfolk and Fremont after leaving Pierce. Hugo died August 13, 1960, at the age of 61 from a heart attack. He is buried in Malvern, Iowa.

Ethel Jeanette Buckendahl was born May 6, 1925, in Pierce, Nebraska. On June 22, 1947, she married Lee Roy Robbins in Omaha, Nebraska. To this marriage was born Jeanette on February 8, 1950. Ethel graduated from the Methodist School of Nursing in Omaha in 1946. Ethel passed away October 24, 1962, at the age of 37 after a lengthy illness caused by leukemia. She is buried in Malvern, Iowa.

Otto Charles Buckendahl was born May 21, 1900, in Pierce. He was baptized and as a youth was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from high school and attended Concordia College at Steward, Nebraska. On September 24, 1922, Otto married Rose Hilgert who was born May 26, 1901. To this marriage was born Dale Edward on July 4, 1930. Also, a child was stillborn and another died in infancy. Otto had bookkeeping experience with the family's farm implement business in Pierce and worked for a variety of dealers trying to reorganize after the 1930's depression. Locations included Plainview, Sidney and Scottsbluff in Nebraska; Powell and Cheyenne in Wyoming; Sterling and Ft. Collins in Colorado. They lived in Scottsbluff when Otto died February 12, 1951, at the age of 49 when his car stalled in a snowstorm. Otto had gone to Cheyenne, Wyoming on a business trip and attempted to return home in the snowstorm. His car stalled and Otto tried to walk to a range house. His frozen body was found about a half mile from the house. Rose remained in Scottsbluff until 1955 when she moved to Boulder, Colorado to be near her son. She died in November 23, 1986, at the age of 85. Otto and Rose are buried in St. John's Cemetery east of Pierce.
